Hello,

My husband and I are planning on relocating to Texas next year. We are in search of a new home and we have an interest in the Meritage homes in Grand Prairie, TX. We have read alot of information about all parts of DFW but we are just confused. We want a brand new affordable home (maximum price 300,00) with a good school district and not too far from the downtown area. Can anyone tell us something about Grand Prairie at all?! Or anywhere else that might fit our criteria?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

I don't know if I would categorize Grand Prairie ISD as a "good" school district. It's more like...not so good. There are no exemplary schools in Grand Prairie. It's mostly a low income Hispanic (ESL) district. But then again you hate to toss out an entire district based on a district's overall scores and reputation. There may be individual schools that are okay.

If you go to the Texas Education Agency website you can learn more about Grand Prairie ISD or another ISD in the state.

I work in Grand Prairie, and just moved down here in April of this year. Honestly, come visit.. even if its only for a day or two. Take a drive and check out Grand Prairie, Grapevine, Coppell, Irving/Valley Ranch, etc.. that's the only way you're really going to get any idea. I was all excited about Grand Prairie before coming down since thats where I was working and home prices were very cheap compared to what I was used to. However, I got down here and I knew the area just wasn't going to be for me. There are many things I do in Grand Prairie and North Arlington, but its just not where I'd choose to live. You may feel the exact opposite, who knows.. but come check it out. That's my best advice. I just recently bought a home (after being here about 6 months) and I saw so many neighborhoods, it was great. People have given that advice on this board time and time again.. and I'm now a believer

Default I live in GP...

I live in far south Grand Prairie in the Grand Peninsula subdivision and I love the area. I agree that the area is one that you just have to see for yourself. The school district for my area is Mansfield ISD.

Areas like where the above poster lives (way south Grand Prairie) that are in the Mansfield school district are good. Most other parts of GP are just so-so or even less. Far north GP has older neighborhoods, nice with lots of trees but most schools in GP are not that great. When my daughter was growing up in Grand Prairie she went to private schools then later went to public schools in west Arlington. That area is generally better.

If you're dead set on Grand Prairie, avoid the GPISD. Stick to areas that attend Mansfield schools.

Default Thanks!

Everyone's post have been very helpful! Being that I am not dead set on Grand Prairie, are there any other neighborhoods that you could suggest that meet my criteria I stated above?

Which downtown area are you talking about that you want to be near, Dallas or Fort Worth?

Dallas would be the preferred. Is that where most of the jobs are?

Not necessarily. The entire DFW metorplex, including the many suburbs, has jobs everywhere. What do you do for a living?
