This is an old thread, but nothing much has changed. Plano's a perfectly nice 'burb with excellent schools (arguably the best in the Metroplex, considering that it's not quite as affluent as the other top performing districts). Whether or not it works for you will depend on commute and your own personal preferences.

The Dallas suburbs in general tend to be newer and therefore not much different in ambiance from one to the other. Richardson would be one of the few exceptions to that rule. Seriously, all the 'burbs noted here are generally safe, kinda generic, with good schools.

best place is where parents are not tied up commuting for hours daily and the budget isn't out of whack because the house cost too much for the income stream. All else can be made fine when parents stay involved and attentive.
