I'm going to be coming down from NY to work in Dallas starting June 1st and I've been trying to figure out what to expect!

Mainly, if someone can elaborate on what the nightlife and social scene is like and what there is to do on the weekends that'd be awesome. I'm 19 and like going out, are bars strict?

Thanks

There is lots to do but, yes, bars do check IDs.

The main hangout/entertainment areas are Uptown (bars/pubs/restaurants/movie theater), Henderson Avenue in East Dallas (restaurants/bars), Deep Ellum east of downtown (live music venues, clubs, restaurants) Main Street downtown (lounges/bars/restaurants), The Cedars south of downtown (live music venues/bars), Lower Greenville Avenue (live music/restaurants), Bishop Arts District in North Oak Cliff (restaurants), Oak Lawn (dance music clubs/restaurants/bars), Addison (bars/restaurants), and Shops at Legacy area in Plano (bars/restaurants/movie theater).

Then over in Fort Worth, you've got downtown (restaurants/bars/movie theater), West 7th St. (bars/restaurants/movie theater), Magnolia Avenue (restaurants/bars), and The Stockyards (country-themed bars/restaurants).

If you are 19, you aren't going to be able to get into many bars as most good ones check ids at the door. You can go to clubs, but if you get caught drinking, you will get thrown out or possibly turned into the cops.

What truedat said for live music venues and clubs and the movie theatre.

I googled 'Dallas under 21' and got some results...

Under 21 in Dallas

Not sure how up to date this is, you'll have to do your own research. Looks like these might be in an area of town called Deep Elum which has historically been kinda cool but remote, as in outside usual parts of town. Deep Elum is just across a freeway from downtown. There's some cool lofts there.

Drinking age in Texas is 21 and violations don't result in joy for the violator. Liquor control is pro-active in pursuing violators, including use of minors who look older to buy liquor.

Yes, bars card and are strict.

As PP's said, concerts/ live music venues/ festivals/ house parties are easier places to find your "fun".

You'll find a lot of SMU/college aged kids in the bars along Greenville Ave/ SMU Blvd/ Dyer Street (just east of SMU's campus) and in Uptown. If you can get it, you'd probably enjoy bars like The Loon, Uptown Pub, Primo's (actually you can get into Primo's since it's a restaurant, too). Frankie's and Nodding Donkey are good for watching sporting events. Too bad the Mavs are already out of the playoffs b/c watch parties were awesome last summer!

Internship? If so, don't go drinking underage. It just isn't worth it.

I speak as someone who is heavily involved in the recruiting of interns for my company.

It's called a Minor in Posession, and it's a class B misdemeanor. That will show up on every criminal background check potential employers run on you. And, the bartender gets charged with Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor, which is also a class B and causes them to lose their server certification. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is VERY strict on enforcement at clubs. Long story short, if you're not 21, don't even think about drinking alcohol in Texas.

Forgot to mention that up in Denton, near the University of North Texas, there are lot of indie-rock bars like Hailey's and Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. There are some places around North Texas, that are more live-music venues than simply bars, that will let those under 21 in, though they may charge a steeper cover, like at Hailey's for example.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

What's Dallas like on the weekends? What are the things to do? Preferably cheap as I'll be living on my own and on a budget.

There's all sorts of stuff to do. What do you like to do besides go see live music? Below are lists of some of the more obvious free things in Dallas and Fort Worth. And there's usually some festival or other going on, some of which are free or have minimal admission.
