Good evening,

My husband is getting a position that requires us to move to around the Dallas area for travel from the DFW airport. We are moving from Michigan and have started researching the area. Would like a smaller town, great school systems, and a safe neighborhood. (Doesn't everyone?) We have looked into McKinney, Lewisville, Flower Mound areas via the internet they all look great but I am just curious of what you all think about each area and please don't be shy be honest. Also would like to understand why property taxes are so expensive, and what other taxes are there? and what are the average electric and gas bills for homes around the 2000 sq. ft. range. I think we are a bit in shock because things seem a bit more expensive. The houses seem affordable, but you have to be able to pay all the bills. So if you don't mind giving us some info on what to expect we surely would appreciate being able to make a informed decision. As you can tell lots on our minds. Thank you for your time and informatioh!

Sincerely,
Sillystewie

If you are looking for a "smaller town" none of the areas you listed really fall into that catagory. What do you consider "small town" and that may help steer you the right direction? McKinney is going to put you the farthest from the airport too. And traffic could be a nightmare for that commute.

momof2dfw is right, while the cities you mentioned may not meet your "small town" criteria, they're still safe places and might be what you're looking for. Depends upon exactly what you mean by small town and what kind of lifestyle you're looking for.

In short, the likely reason for the higher property taxes is the lack of a state income tax.

If all yall need is some proximity to DFW Airport, there are also plenty of cities west of the airport, on the Fort Worth side, that you might look into as well.
