Quick question about homestead exemptions. We bought our house in July of 2012. Are we able to claim the exemption on our 2012 taxes, or do we have to wait until 2013? I gather it is the latter? I'm a little confused as to how it all works, though I just found the form online.

You have to be in the house by Jan 1 to claim a homestead exemption & pay lower property taxes for that year. Your first tax year with the exemption will be 2013, but you can of course claim the property taxes you did pay at full rate on your 2012 income tax return under "itemized deductions".

Also, 2012 taxes were due by 1/31 so I hoe you paid the bill already!

It seems like you are confusing taxes eligible for itemized deductions on your 1040 and eligibility for the homestead exemption. Hope I un-confused you

We recently bought our house and last week received paperwork in the mail to claim the 2013 exemption. I am pretty sure it said you have to live in the house as of Jan 1 to claim the exemption and you have to flie it by some time in March or April. So, if I read it correctly you (and I) can claim in 2013 but not 2012.

I live in Denton Co. and I was able to use the Homestead Exemption claimed by the previous owner. I bought in Sept, don't know if that matters. Have to file my own this year.

If it is the service that does it for you for a fee...don't bother! You can do it online. I just wasn't sure if we were too late for 2012, but I guess it isn't even an option. Previous owner was a bank (foreclosure) so I'm guessing there is no exemption held by the previous owner.

The beauty of escrow.

We got our homestead exemption letter in the mail last week as well. We need to fill out the form and mail it in along with a copy of our drivers' licenses(that has been updated with new address) and a copy of our vehicle registration.

We bought the house in December, so we'll be eligible for homestead exemption for year 2013. I do have a few questions though. My vehicle registration paper still has my old address on it. I mailed in a change of address form to an address in Austin(I can't remember where exactly but I got it off of the State of TX motor vehicle website. This was supposed to change my address on my registration, however I have yet to receive a copy of my vehicle registration with my new address on it. Does anyone know how I can go about obtaining this in a fairly timely manner as I want to get that homestead exemption form sent in ASAP.

Thanks!

No. It is for owners who actually live there
