Don't forget that in Dallas Co you also pay a Parkland tax, but there's not an equivalent in Collin Co.

When we moved from Garland 7 years ago to Murphy our total tax rate was essentially the same, but we were no longer paying for Parkland. So if you'd have compared apples to apples each of the Murphy home apples was higher. But we felt we were getting more for our money in each of those apples and overall.

If Plano has lower tax rate and gives more homestead exemptions then my tax bill will be significantly less here as compared to someone with a similar home price in Dallas, Coppell or Prosper? Do you pay Parkland Hospital tax in Plano?

Find a street you like, pull up the appraisal district for that county, find a house with a similar value, confirm same exemptions, and poof-there are your taxes.

Parkland is $500/ yr on a $250k house. Nice to have in your pocket, but not exactly a windfall.

Also consider your commute and the cost of vehicle maintenance, gas and tolls (and if you will be able to deduct the taxes through itemizing).

True, but I wasn't looking at it that way. Just making sure she new that if comparing there was an additional tax in Dallas Co she wasn't going to find in Collin Co.

If someone is stressed over $50-$100 a month in taxes they are looking in the wrong price range.

And, OP, it's far easier to save $50-$100 by shopping around for insurance and/or a better mortgage rate. Factor in what your commute costs will be from each location (don't just drive till you qualify if $50 is make or break it to you). What will utility bills be? Maintenance? Is there HOA? All are more important than the sliver of differences in the tax rate.

A $257,890 Dallas City/Dallas County/DISD house with homestead exemption pays taxes of $6,407.47 a year ($533.95 a month).

A $258,314 Plano/Collin County/PISD house with homestead exemption pays taxes of $5,163.25 a year ($430.27 a month).

There are better ways to save $103 a month than worrying about the tax rate.

I agree.
OP - why don't you live where you will have a better quality of life (which of course will depend on many personal factors)???
