What type of theater do you like? If you're talking big Broadway touring productions there's Dallas Summer Musicals series Welcome to Dallas Summer Musicals

If you're looking for something more dramatic, check what's on at the Wyly Theatre (Home - AT&T Performing Arts Center) and The Dallas Theater Center (Dallas Theater Center | Dallas, TX). Their current production of "Fly By Night" has gotten raves. For smaller, edgier stuff there's the Undermain Theater, McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Theater 3, Kitchen Dog Theater, Ochre House, Nouveau 47, African American Repertory Theater (DeSoto), WaterTower Theater (Addison), Lyric Stage (Irving), and over in Fort Worth, there's Stage West and Jubilee Theater. There are others but those are the ones that come to mind.

As for places to drive to, Austin is doable. It's about 200 miles away. It can be a fun town and you may want to check it out as long as you're here just to see what all the hype is about. Depending on your tastes, you may actually find the nearby Hill Country including smaller, tourist towns like Fredericksburg more interesting in an Americana/Texana kind of way. Make sure there's a ceiling fan or another kind of fan in their sleeping area....that's definitely one thing you can easily do that will be most appreciated!

Don't forget Rough Riders games-they are just all around more user friendly than Rangers (unless they are big fans or something).

There is also the Science Place at Fair Park-very fun for kids and adults alike.

The Pocket Sandwich theater is also worth checking out. Kids love it, as they get to throw popcorn.

The Science Place is closed now (replaced by The Perot Museum downtown). The Perot Museum is operating the former Nature/History building at Fair Park, but it's mostly the old dioramas and exhibits that weren't good enough to make it to the new place. You can read about it here:

Aw, that's kind of sad... I'd think the Perot would have enough on its own without having to cannibalize from existing venues. But I'm sure the folks in charge of Fair Park can make good use of the now-vacant spaces!
