The OP is asking about downtown. Might as well send him to Frisco.

FYI. There is a Meso Maya behind the El Fenix across the street from the Perot Museum - it's pretty close to a downtown location. Oy!....it's on the other side of Woodall Rogers...might as well send him to Frisco. Double eye roll...

Plus Las Ventanas is a great taco spot...behind that Meso Maya.

I've been to Meso Maya - it's good. I have heard it's the El Fenix folks that opened it up, it's right behind the El Fenix - the menu consists of meals you would find in the more interior regions of Mexico. Try the Pastel de Chocolate for dessert - it's Oaxacan dark chocolate cake with corn ice cream and warm chocolate rum sauce.

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, with "kid friendly," .... please, control your kids while in the restaurant.

I say this as a former waiter in a Mexican restaurant trying desperately not to accidentally brain-and-scald small children being let run underfoot by the folks from our local equestrian club (who were infamous for using us as their babysitters) while carrying heavy trays of fajitas, mole, the works. I'm sure any restaurant has things you don't want dropped on your kids, but things with scalding-hot (literally and Scovilley!) pepper mixes do NOT mix well with tiny adorable oblivious people underfoot.
