Hoping some of you who are knowledgeable about private school admissions in Dallas can help me out.

We will not know for sure if we are moving to Dallas until this spring -- way past the private school application deadline. We also currently live on the other side of the world from Dallas, so getting to events like information evenings is virtually impossible.

If this move comes through, we would like to move to Preston Hollow or the Park Cities. We have a daughter who will be starting 2nd grade next fall. She has an interesting background given she's a smart girl who is American but has never actually lived in the States (she has attended private international schools).

What are the chances that any of the top tier private schools would even accept an application from her in March/April for a 2nd grade spot? Will we have to limit our house search to the Park Cities so that school admissions aren't an issue and she can attend HPISD?

What limits you from applying now? Worst case, you do not accept the admission if the move does not go through...

I can only speak at Hockaday (which is generally considered the top all girls school in Dallas and one of the best in the United States). Admission at Second Grade is tough and is generally predicated on another girl leaving and thus opening up a spot. The classes have 48 students and that generally stays consistent through 5th grade (then it increases). On occasion they will increase to 49, but generally that is not the case. Not that being said, I strongly encourage you to call them and discuss your situation. The director of admissions is Jen Liggett.

As HockDad said, 2nd grade is a tough admission year at all privates as the schools don't open additional spots that year like they do in K, 5, 6, 9. An opening would be by attrition alone in 99.9% of cases. That said, for every private school family like yours who is moving to Dallas next spring/summer, another is leaving due to job transfers or other reasons. If you're open to all private school options, not just an all-girls school or a Catholic school, I would think your admission chances would be better.

I second the advice to begin making contact with all schools now.
