I will be moving to the Dallas area in May 2014 from the Philadelphia suburbs. I'm a 23-year-old guy, I just graduated from college this past May, and I would really like to get some information about different neighborhoods within the city.

My office will be in Irving but I would like to live in a more urban, young environment; close to a bar/club scene. I'm looking for a one bedroom apartment that would ideally cost under $900/mo., but again I would really like to be close to people my age and an active night life.

If anyone could provide me with some insight/guidance so that I can narrow down my search for apartments, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks & Happy Holidays

If I were you, I'd look at the uptown area in Dallas and commute to Irving for work. You can find a studio apt for your budget easily enough but a one bedroom would be more challenging.

You also might want to take a look at the Village. A bit further from Irving but under $900 is way more doable there.

I agree with The Villages start there and then see where you want to move The Village Apartments

Although it is a little further, there are several options for your commute to Irving.

I live in the Carrollton area in a community with nothing but one bedrooms. These kind of apartment complexes are going to have more single people in them. A lot of people are telling you Uptown because thats where SMU students tend to live. Pretty much anywhere you live in the Dallas area is going to have a lot of youngish people.

If you are looking at staying near a college campus here are the schools that you should look around:

University of Texas at Dallas - http://goo.gl/maps/c6cBu
University of Texas at Arlington - http://goo.gl/maps/OgzTB
North Texas - http://goo.gl/maps/un2dS
SMU - Southern Methodist University - http://goo.gl/maps/sGR9L

If you are living in Irving, Grapevine is not a bad place to be. There are a lot of things to do in the area and it puts you close to the airport. Really since you are working in Irving you have a lot of options as its pretty much in the middle of DFW.

Communities within 15 min of Irving (without Traffic)
  • Grapevine
  • Arlington
  • Euless
  • Grand Prairie
  • Oak Cliff (I WOULD STAY AWAY)
  • Farmers Branch
  • Coppell

I would also consider staying away from Irving around 183 (North Irving area)

Uptown is not where SMU students tend to live. Uptown is mostly professionals around 23-33 years old.

SMU kids tend to live closer to SMU.

You beat me to it! Sure, some SMU kids live in Uptown but most live on and around campus. This is only going to increase since the school is soon requiring ALL freshmen AND sophomores to live on campus with the completion of the sophomore dorms. A large portion of the campus is Greek and most upperclassmen live in their fraternity or sorority houses.

Uptown simply can't be beat for the 20-40's professional scene, walk ability and a dense urban environment, and proximity to the best of Dallas (arts district, Katy Trail, American Airlines arena, top restaurants & bars, etc). Highway access is excellent and OP's AM commute to Irving will be about 20 minutes/ closer to 30 minutes PM.

Welcome to Dallas, OP!

As far as yuppie places go, one can pretty much cross of Grapevine, Euless, Grand Prairie, Farmers Branch, and Coppell from that list. If you don't have children, you'd kill yourself from boredom and loneliness in any of those suburbs pretty quickly--they are not by any means meccas for young childless people with disposable income. Arlington you may be better off, though I'm not sure--there are quite a few students living there, but I don't know if there are many young people who are out of school.

Oak Cliff is not a "stay away" place. Oak Cliff is a massive area covering roughly the southwestern quarter of the city of Dallas, and it's absurd to try to lump it all together--as absurd as telling people to stay away from North Dallas based on having seen Harry Hines and Vickery Meadows, or saying stay away from Lakewood because it's close to Fair Park.

Parts of Oak Cliff, especially the Bishop Arts District, are "in" right now, to the point that I don't know if you could find a decent 1BR for $900 there.

Uptown is pretty much the yuppie mecca in Dallas, but it's pricey. The Village, Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, parts of Old East Dallas, and perhaps Addison Circle are other hotbeds of young professionals. I would be wary of anyone recommending a suburb other than possibly Addison, as they simply do not have much to offer for 20-somethings.

I'm sorry you stay away from Oak Cliff. You're missing out on some of the most vibrant neighborhoods, about half of the top restaurants in Dallas, and you're totally missing out on the prettiest topography in the metroplex! Not to mention a booming real estate market and one of the best spots for value appreciation (though you've already missed the first ride up).

South Dallas (the neighborhood you really meant to say) and North Oak Cliff are two completely different areas, separated by an interstate. Do a little homework before throwing out "facts" that simply aren't true.

I couldn't agree more. Oak Cliff has beautiful neighborhoods, and great food.

I would say Uptown(75219, 75204) should be your first choice, as others have said. Post and Gables have most of the building in uptown. I think a few buildings have studios or small 1 bedrooms under $900.
