I noticed there is no state income tax in Texas. Since there is no such thing as a free lunch. Where does funding for state programs come from? I see that sales tax is around 8.5 percent. In the state I am from, Local sales tax funds local government issues. What about property taxes? In Illinois the property taxes for a 250K house are around 6500.00 annually with the bulk of these funds going to schools and park districts. Any info would help.

Property taxes here on that 250k house would be similar. They go to school (over half), county, county hospital (if there is one). State sales tax, various biz taxes, gas tax and other surcharges supply all revenue to the state here. Additionally, they have an unlimited supply of hot air.

Just how bad are the gas taxes. As of today, in Illinois, a gallon of gas is about $3.10 at the pump.

Texas has, in general, less state sponsored programs, which keeps the overall tax burden down a bit.
