So you might want to check out the area up here. I do NOT have to commute to Dallas but I could be in Frisco at Eldorado and the Dallas North Tollway area which is about 36 miles in about 1 hour. The land up in this area is gorgeous. It has lots of Post Oaks and sandy loam. It is extremely desirable. My land value has already gone up about $6,000.00 an acre since I purchase 2.5 years ago.
Red River and Lake Ray Roberts area seems a little too north for us. Although the Dallas area can get tornados my wife wants to stay further south. We havent delt with any tornados ever and its hard to help her understand that they are much easier than earthquakes.

Good luck with your search. Don't know what to say if you want to avoid Tornadoes. If you want to buy property in the country then build a storm shelter. That's what we did. One thing I will say is that I am on about 21 acres. My taxes are pretty low as my property is in Ag. You might want to look at each County's requirements for minimum acreage in order to take advantage of Ag exempt status.

Check out the Canton area in East Texas. I believe it's about 1 hour from Dallas.
