My older son is turning 10 in a couple of weeks so we want to take him somewhere special in Dallas. He's a rather adventurous eater who likes everything from tamales and Indian food to sashimi, escargot and octopus. He's asked to go somewhere he hasn't been before so I checked out Guide Live and got overwhelmed with the choices. When I quizzed him before searching he mentioned that the American upscale and European categories sounded interesting. I'm hoping to find a place that feels special, will excite his palate but isn't a stuffy or snooty place that will be unhappy at the sight of a couple of kids. I would love y'alls suggestions. We'd like to travel no further north than the Inwood Theater or Knox-Henderson since we'll be driving into Dallas on a weeknight.

How about a Japanese steak house; kids love to watch the chefs do their magic

Jinbeh in Las Colinas is fun. There's a free parking garage behind it; after you can walk along the canal -- just lovely in the evening after dark. Also walk up to the Mustangs statues close by.

How about Rise No 1 in Inwood Village? It's French (mostly soufflés, both savory & sweet) and festive. Or Casa Rubia (tapas) in Trinity Groves? Neither are stuffy and both are unique (for Dallas) and European. Another thought is Medina in Victory Park is also a hidden gem- it's Moroccan food and the owner is delightful.

Perry's Steakhouse & Grille. It's kids friendly and the menu is diverse enough. They have some good escargot and he may even want to try the bone marrow. There is one on McKinney in Uptown. They have some of the best calamari I have ever had.

Haven't been, but I've been itching to try this place: Nikkei | Home. We often forget how migration influences food all over the world. I believe it opens this week. There was an article about it in the last couple of weeks in DMN or Advocate (something like "10 new restaurants coming...").

My friends went to Nikkei last week and raved about it - it's Japanese/Peruvian.

I think 560 is still great. Really good food - Asian. And a fun setting for a 10 yr old.

Its pretty good but just a family friendly restaurant; I don't think "special" enough to drive from Arlington to Plano. If German is desired, there's a nicer one closer in Fort Worth

I like the tapas idea for the variety it would allow.

Thanks for the list. I wasn't hungry since I just ate Indian takeout leftovers but somehow my stomach is growling again. I looked at Nikkei and it looked interesting. Is it handicapped accessible? My mom is coming and she uses a walker sometimes. Rise looked like fun and I love tapas. Spain is on my unwritten bucket list. I'm a fan of Bavarian Grill but I think it's too far on a weeknights. Jinbeh looked tasty but I think my son has had a lot of Japanese food lately. I'm going to have a tough time choosing.
