“Russia & Brazil now seeing more new daily cases than any other country except the US”

It is no coincidence that this pandemic is worse in countries where politics are prioritized over public health.
It's also no coincidence that countries with higher populations are likely to have higher daily cases.

Brazil is going to be bad. Bolsonaro is either a complete fool... or a very cold and calculating politician. I have family there, they think he sees this as the perfect opportunity to eliminate a huge chunk of the poor population living in favelas around the country. However, I don't think he realizes that he can't simply segregate all the sick people in the favelas from the rest of the population, in say, Rio. Just not possible. If it gets out of control there it will be worse than New York, no question. Same with their other major cities. Due to the topography, cities build up much like New York, not out, like Dallas. They have a lot of multigenerational families there too, so I would not be surprised if they end up worse than the US, even though they have 100 million less people.

Interesting article on visualization of occupations and risks...

"While some of these findings may be obvious—nurses and paramedics have a higher chance of exposure to the virus than lawyers and web developers, for example—these datasets allow us to assign a more quantitative figure to each occupation’s level of risk."

"Our score for each occupation is based on evaluating the data on three physical job attributes covered in the occupational database:

Contact With Others:
How much does this job require the worker to be in contact with others in order to perform it?
Physical Proximity:
To what extent does this job require the worker to perform tasks in close physical proximity to others?
Exposure to Disease and Infection:
How often does this job require exposure to hazardous conditions?"

https://www.visualcapitalist.com/the...covid-19-risk/

surprised to not see meat workers and a few others in enclosed and/or higher volume personal contact environments higher.

Number of diners is still down over 80% vs previous year for the same week. The reopening of the restaurants has not been a success.

Seated Diners for week of 05/12/20 vs previous year.
-84% Texas
-95% Austin
-89% Dallas
-85% San Antonio
-81% Houston

This data includes online reservations, phone reservations, and walk-ins.
Data is available from Open Table State of the Industry report https://www.opentable.com/state-of-industry

This data shows year-over-year seated diners at restaurants on the OpenTable network across all channels: online reservations, phone reservations, and walk-ins. For year-over-year comparisons by day, we compare to the same day of the week from the same week in the previous year. For example, we’d compare Tuesday of week 11 in 2020 to Tuesday of week 11 in 2019. Only states or cities with 50+ restaurants in the sample are included. All such restaurants on the OpenTable network in either period are included.
