We are looking into the possibility of moving to the Dallas area very soon. I know nothing about the area but have step-family in Lewisville. My questions revolve mostly around my kids and safety of areas. Also we want to live in a nice area relatively small but we know that it will totally different from where we are coming from. 10,000 people tops in our whole area with houses on 1/2 acres but not smaller is what we have been used to. We have to drive 30 minutes for a Walmart and 1 hour for Costco.

I have 4 boys 15, 11,10 and 6.
The 15 year old will be in 10th grade. He is into speech/debate, theater and choir-he made the Encore here at this high school and they only take 20 kids. We come from a very small and rural town outside of Las Vegas. The graduating class is only 100 kids maybe. He does not care much about sports but is concerned about those classes mentioned above. He also has taken all Honors classes all through middle school and so far through high school. He will be 16 in 7 months and so will be driving and wanting a job. Also we are LDS and want him to participate in Seminary. He is very college focused and wants to pursue concurrent enrollment or AP classes when he can.

The 11 year old has some medical issues. He has diabetes and so we would need a good pediatrician for him. He also has other issues and requires IEP adaptations through the special education department to his school plan. He will be going to middle school and he is very immature. This child loves to be outside and so we would need to feel that our kids are safe in their neighborhood and that they can go and play outside without fear.

The 10 year old will do fine anywhere. He is very social and likes to be with friends. He is very smart and gets along with most people and teachers. He just wants to have close friends with the same values as him.

The 6 year old has a lot of developmental delays. He has been in Special Ed preschool and will be finishing special ed kindergarten now. His IEP puts him in the regular classroom for first grade but with modifications for skills and testing and also to be pulled to the Special Ed class for reading and math. He is not very out going and I worry about him the most. Even though he had been going to this same school for 3 years it took him 2 months to get settled and comfortable this year to even start participating/working in class. He knew the school and the kids and it was still hard on him.

We are looking at Lewisville-because my family is there or Flower Mound. Any thoughts on surrounding areas would be good. My husband works out of the house and so will not have to be commuting. He will have to fly out of DFW a few times a month so access to that is needed. He loves football and has coached the middle school teams here for 4 years now and he wants to be involved in that as much as he can. We are very involved in our church and community and want the same lifestyle that we have here if possible.

We will be coming down there in 2 weeks to look around.

Any suggestions or thought you can provide will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Communities near Lewisville you may want to consider include Flower Mound, Highland Village, Carrollton, Coppell, Denton. Of course if you want to live more rurally you can look out in Krum, Ponder, Argyle, Decatur, but of course the schools may not have things like debate teams, choir, etc there. You may want to google these school districts. All school districts that receive federal funds provide special education services based on an individualized plan for each student. Make sure you bring copies of your children's IEP's when they enroll. Of course, records will requested from your district, but having copies usually gets the ball rolling a little more quickly.

Both Fort Worth and Dallas have major children's medical centers. Cook Childrens is in Fort Worth but has community based clinics all over the metroplex.

I don't know a thing regarding LDS churches in the area, but perhaps your current church could help you locate a new place to worship. Of course, google will likely be helpful in locating places as well.

Good luck with your relocation plans.

You sound like you have your hands full. Both Lewisville and Flower Mound are very family oriented. Other cities you may want to consider within close proximity of Lewisville would be Grapevine, they have an excellent school district. If you want newer communities, may be a master planned one, I can suggest Lantana, which is in Denton's ISD.

You will see that this metroplex is very spread out (3500 square miles) so explore as much as you can during your visit.
