In Europe, Middle east and Latin America, homes are very versatile and with personality. Just like clothing, cost only plays a small part in giving home a personality. Keeping up with the Jonses and Joannas plays a bigger role.

That is a lot of real estate you are brushing with one stroke. How much time have you spent in Europe, Middle East and Latin America? How much time have you spent where in the US?

Builders will build what sells. Customers will buy what they want to/can afford. SO is just showing me a house he considers close to remodelable - tub has to go.

That's not a very high bar around here. They could put up a cardboard box. As long as it's new and well-marketed, people will be falling over themselves to buy it.

Most people moving in the middle-to-upper price ranges of the current market don't want to keep up with the Joneses. They want a status symbol to impress other people. Being "new" or having a particular school, subdivision, or municipal designation gives it the status symbol.

Yeah, those enormous concrete apartment blocks and tin shacks are real "versatile and with personality".
