We have a guy and his crew who comes regularly to cut our grass but have not used a lawn company for maintenance (should we, if yes, any recommendations). Any suggestions if I want to work on my lawn myself, mostly interested in controlling weeds. Thanks.

You have to put down a pre-emergent weed killer during the late fall. For now you best plan of attack would be to spot treat with a weedkiller you can get from the big boxes.

Right now that spot treatment would be with a broadleaf weed killer. The warmer the weather the better.

weeds were not really hurt since it was mild winter--pre-emergent is pretty useless now I think since weeks seems to be flourishing--spot treatment--
remember that different types of grass take different types of spray--wrong one can kill your grass---

we tried almost all the major yard services and found that none of them did a decent job at actually keeping weeds OUT of our yard by what they sprayed...maybe an independed yard company (and there are plenty of them in the area might be better)
my idea--walk your neighborhood--find a yard that looks really nice and just ask the people if they have yard service...
