My husband and I are heading down to the Middletown area next weekend from New York to check it out. Can anyone suggest some places we should check out? Any restaurants, developments, anything like that? We are trying to see if the area is a fit for our family, any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!!

As far as housing, what are you looking for? Size/price/amenities? There are loads of newer developments around Middletown.

I love living in Middletown, but I wouldn't say there's an overwhelming amount of things to "do" here. As far as restaurants go, there are several chains and a few locally owned. Immediato's, E's on Main, Caruso's, Sunrise Bagel Shop (also does sandwiches, etc), Middletown Seafood, a few different pizza places... That's what comes to my mind in terms of locally owned places right in Middletown. There's Bing's Bakery for cupcakes, treats. Just south of Middletown on Rt 13 is Willey Farms (Willey Farms of Delaware - Our Story) a pretty neat store. On Thursday-Saturday is the Dutch Country Farmers Market in Middletown.

Nearby (about 20 minutes north) is Christiana Mall, and in a different northern direction, People's Plaza, where there's a movie theater. I often see folks fishing (crabbing?) at Augustine Beach on Rt 9 (and also along the several bridges of Rt 9), but I don't know if it's too cold for that. Delaware City (about 30 minutes north of Middletown) has a ferry you can take to Fort Delaware which was used as a prison during the Civil War.

30 minutes south of Middletown is Dover, the state capital. In addition to that, there's the casino and the racetrack.

Ditto to Bacos. We moved from Central Jersey to Middletown. Very, very different but adjusting and enjoying it. I would suggest checking out the "downtown" 4 corners area to check out a few local places to eat and some some shops. I also think Willey's is a neat place to go. (I really enjoyed the Christmas displays/merchandise in Nov/Dec). It is a Country Store of sorts. Now that the weather is breaking, there should be some Open Houses on Sunday as well of plenty of new developments to check out without having a realtor with you. If you are looking into the schools, go to the Appoquinimink School District website for info. You can match a home/development to the school your children will attend. Lots of luck!

This sounds like a cute little town. I was wondering how far it is from any beaches?

About an hour and one half to the beaches. Dewey, Rehoboth, Lewes, Bethany and Ocean City which really is a year round city now. Middletown is a 'bedroom' town. Everyone seems to drive to Wilmington or Philadelphia to work then come home. Weekends are fairly busy. They even have a super Wally World, Lowes and Home Depot. Appo school district is known to be one of the best. There are private schools there as well. St Andrews boarding school 9-12 (World Famous), Saint Annes Episcopal School, PreK to 8th plus some others. Dependent on your price range, there are tons of options. Just don't look for a house on Lake St.
Oh, make sure you obey the speed limits down here. Middltown just got their own police force a few years back and there isn't much crime so they look for out of towners that like to drive above the speed limit. If you're on the back roads and the limit is 40, be sure you do 40.
Have a great time. I know a lot of people love Middletown. I don't live there but have worked there for the past 4 years.

Depending on where in Middletown you live, it can take as little as an hour. We live off of Rt 13 in Odessa area (but still Middletown address) and that's about how long it takes us... when it's not beach season.

Thank you for the heads up on the speed limit! We are excited to come down and check it out. We have liked what we have seen online. We probably wouldn't be moving for a year and a half or so. We are just looking for a good place to raise our family. Thank you for all the recommendations on restaurants and some places of interest. We are pretty much homebodies but it's nice to know where to get out when we can!

As far as what we will be looking for in a home, it would probably be a four bedroom home with a nice yard for our kids. Any names of developments would be helpful. I know there is The Estates at St. Annes, but I have heard that they were going bankrupt so the golf course wasn't going to be built. Not sure if that still holds true, the articles I saw online were from a few years ago. I hadn't seen any new information on them. I have heard of Parkside as well. I'm sure some of the other homes we have looked at online are in other communities, but I guess they weren't specific in the listings. I guess I am looking for recommendations, I know my husband would like to be in the vicinity of a golf course, it doesn't have to be part of the community. Just close! Thanks!!!

We are a golfing family! You may want to look into Backcreek, The Legends and Parkside. We loved the homes at PS but at the time couldn't wait for new construction. They have a beautiful"clubhouse"/pool area and are right next to Frog Hollow golf.
