Hello. I was looking to retire in Delaware in a few years and was wonder if I could pic a few brains about Delaware. Its my understanding real estate taxes are low, no sales tax, pensions are not taxed, and there is no inheritance tax. Someone told me there is a annual tax on certain items like cars.. It that true? How much of a tax is it and what other items are taxed. I live in Pennsylvania and we pay a 6 percent sales tax on most items but not an annual tax.. I was going to take the Cape May Lewes Ferry over a few times this spring and summer and look at some properties about 5 to 10 miles outside of Dewey Beach and Lewes... It would be nice to own a place where I could be at the beach in a hald hour and keep my boat nearby.. Single house or condo? I would be open to both..
Any input and ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thankss

Milton!! I love MILTON DELAWARE. Everything is at your tips as far as grocery stores, pubs, library, antiques, free summer concerts, restaurants and liquor stores. If you want the beach. Broadkill Beach (bay) is a 5 min drive. Ocean, is only 15 minutes away. Quaint town, lots of fun stuff. Victorian type town. Just love it in Milton, quiet, peaceful.

This may answer a few of your questions. We too are making the move, hopefully this summer.

Thanks for the replys. Milton will definitely be a place to check out. I like the idea od being 15 minutes from the Ocean and 5 from Broadkill.. Is there any good places to launch a boat in the Broadkill area..?

A few miles inland is a great area to live. I can walk to Indian River Bay and walk my dogs along there almost everyday. During the summer it can get hectic off season we have plenty of room to stretch out. If you are interested in going to the actual Atlantic Ocean beach come during the summer and see how long it takes. Living and working here for years I just shake my head at some posts.

Thanks Longnecker. I like the idea of living a little inland in that I will be retired and older. I prefer to not live in a resort town and have to evacuate when a Nor'easter or hurricane rolls in. I think not living in a resort town like Rehobeth may have some advantanges because of the summer crowds but I bet the traffic flow on Rt.1 during the summer must be very heavy. I owned property at the Jersey Shore and living in the Philadelphia suburbs...The trip went from 2 hours on a Friday night to three hours over the years...
I may be down in the Milton area next week and see how long it takes me to get to Broadkill, but you are right in coming down during the summer to experience the summer population..

Ric..The Milton area (zip code) is huge. Pull up a Delaware zip code map. The Milton zip code goes all the way to the Bay. How far you are from the bay or downtown Milton or the Atlantic beaches depends on where you are. While you are in the Milton area hop on Rt5 and checkout the Long Neck area. We have evrything from new $500,000 houses going up to upscale mobile home parks. Fishing, boating, hunting, sitting in a restaurant/bar with your feet in the sand and boats passing 25 feet away that is Long Neck way of life. BayWood and The Peninsula Golf Courses are here.

I love it. I am a senior citizen. Entering into my second marriage we were blessed with a son. (Could have named him surprise) So I kind of see things from both ends. My son is graduating this year and I could not think of a better place to have raised him.
Come check the area out with an open mind. As I said I love it. I know others who are not happy. Not enough going on off season or too much during the summer. Once you know the area and make friends there ARE things to to do and unless you have moved right on to RT 1 there are ways to avoid traffic in the summer.

Thanks for the replys! Kind of like the Jersey shore. Empty in the winter and packed in the summer.. It would nice to be close to the water. Be at the beach or the boat ramp in 20 minutes would be great! I have navigated the Rehobeth and Indian River Bay a few times and found it pretty tricky because of the low water depths..We used to come down the Cape May canal and follow the Ferry over... I wonder if the Rusty Rudder is still there? There used to be oldies bands playing on the dock every Tuesday in the summer... Cant wait to check out some of the areas down there...
