I don't think I've come across a thread with this topic, and I am just curious to read what others have seen out there in our little state.

So....what have you encountered in Delaware in regard to animals and insects? Most of us have seen the usual...squirrels, rabbits, deer. etc. Anything very unusual?

I'll share just a few: recently, I saw an owl in my cypress tree. Big one too--a barred owl. I've also finally seen a coyote (maybe two?).

How about everyone else?

While driving in DE, we've seen wild turkeys on the roadway. For us current New Yorkers (we'll be fixing that real soon) that's unusual.

We can go a year or two without seeing any wild turkeys.. Then all the sudden we will see them regularly for a while. Also plenty of foxes and skunks.

In our little town, we have a flock of wild turkeys, plenty of 'possums', red fox, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, and yesterday a deer was in my front yard. Felton has a flock of peacocks. We haven't seen the strange animal lurking in and around Hartly, which has made big news. Amish and local farmers say they have no idea what animal could have a footprint like that. I'll see if I can dig up the news item.

Later: Couldn't find that particular article that was in today's news - a 5" footprint like nobody's seen around here. They guessed maybe a coyote, but ruled that out.

Speaking of coyotes....we have plenty of those. Here's an article on that subject.

Thanks for the quick replies, everyone!! Charley and longnecker....I have never seen turkeys right by my house, but I have seen them by James Farm in Ocean View. Big ol' tom turkey at that.

I always, always see deer in the woods every time I go hiking. We also have them in our yard due to to our close proximity to the woods and farmers' fields. Lots of fox near us too...in fact, one used to stalk my rabbit pen. Shortly after, I moved them inside. It would walk right up to the pen and stare at my rabbits!

rdlr...I was wondering if you had heard about the strange animal in Kent. I tried to google info but I didn't find anything. VERY intriguing....

At Fresh Pond state park near the inlet, I've seen lots of turkeys, deer, owl and geese. I've said it before when Bombay Hook has thousands of snow geese its an awesome sight. Way too many fox for my liking all over the state, I realize the "food chain", but they tear up rabbit, pheasant and baby turkeys. No cougar sightings though, well maybe..., at a nightclub or bar, lol.

The article is in the Delaware State News today, page 10 and there's a photo of the footprint. Area is west of Dover. I've read about this mystery before and the coyote footprint is smaller than this one. Cougar or mountain lion are possibilities mentioned. It will probably be coming to our town soon, to join the rest of the zoo.

rdlr--it probably is a cougar or mountain lion. Pretty neat though!! Maybe somebody will be able to identify it.

I observed what I believe was a coyote about two months ago right in my development as I was taking a walk one day. It was rather pathetic looking--rather small, not much fur (mange?), dead looking eyes, and just kind of gross looking. It most definitely wasn't a dog or a fox. It was only about 15 feet away from me when I saw it, and it looked at me and kept on walking. I wish I had my cell on me to take a pic, but I didn't. I never saw it again. About a month ago, I saw what was definitely a coyote about a 1/4 mile from my house. It was much more attractive looking than the "coyote" I saw back in September.

James420--I agree, too many fox. I have seen countless fox since moving to Ocean View. One attacked my son's friend right in Ocean View about nine years ago and he had to receive rabies shots and has some serious scarring from the attack. I've had fox look right at me and not even try to run away. One came in our backyard one day a few years ago (looking for the rabbits, most likely) and my husband felt threatened by it so he chased it with a rake. I often hear their cries at night, although now I am hearing coyote howls as well.

Oh, and I was just at Fresh Pond today--love seeing all the birds there. I haven't seen a fox there yet, but I really don't want to given I am often out there all by myself. And right down the road is James Farm, which has turkeys and peacocks. Assawoman Wildlife Refuge is also home to many turkeys as well.
