I'm a single female and in May I am relocating from Phoenix to Wilmington, DE. I will be living in an apartment. I have never been to Wilmington in my life and do not know a soul there. Could anyone please tell me specifically where NOT to live? Also, I was on googlemaps.com and I viewed a few neighborhoods. I came across some apartments located in between W 11th street and W 10th street off of Trenton, Monroe, and Madison. Can anyone tell me about this area? Is it safe or not?

Does anyone know of any apartments that rent for $500 - $650 per month that is located in a relatively safe neighborhood? I will be joining Tthe Americorps Vista program as a volunteer. The program does not provide housing, but they do provide a stipend of $900 per month to live on. I have to pay rent, utilities, food, transportation, personal items, misc. items all on $900 per month. I only have a few months before I move to Wilmington and I'm trying to research apartments and where to live the best I can from Phoenix, but I'm having a very difficult time. Really need some help. Thanks!

in that part of Wilmington, it is pretty busy with the people coming and going from the highway...if it is where I think it is, it isn't terrible, but it is great either

The budget you have is making it difficult for you to find something...while Wilmington isn't NYC, it isn't the south either - $500-600 apartments aren't the best, especially being in the city of Wilmington

You can find apartments in your range but they aren't going to be in the safest areas...

could you find a senior person who owns a home and would let you rent a room. That way they
would have added income and you would have a safe place to be.

That actually sounds like a good idea. The only problem I have with that is: I'm here in phoenix and I do not know a soul in delaware. I have no contacts out there. I don't know how I would find a senior person who I could contact/and who would rent a house for $600 (as my americorps stipend is only $900 per month)

Try one of the "roommate" locator sites or Craig's list. You may find something even cheaper than $600 for a room ina decent area.

does it have to be "in" Wilmington? You might have better luck expanding your range.

DE has an OK transit system

jwkde, no it doesn't have to be in Wilmington. That is where my job site will be. I can live in new castle or anywhere near wilmingtoin. I just want to live in a safe apartment building and safe neighborhood and only have $900 to work with ---- that is the stipend I am given to live on (rent, utilities, food, transportation, etc.)

Do you attend a local church where you are now? Ask your church if there is a church of the same denomination in the Wilmington area. Your pastor may be able to contact the church and ask them if anyone who attends that church has a room for rent. A recommendation from your pastor as to your character goes a long way to finding a senior who would be willing to rent you a room on a short term basis.
