I have a tooth that was supposed to get it's crown this coming week. It has previously been root canaled and I was told it had a tiny crack in it.

Well starting like 3 or 4 days ago I've had excruciating pain from what I think is THAT tooth. I believe the root canal worked and the tooth is dead as it's more pain from the gum area and abscess around the tooth that's causing me pain. My dentist put me on antibiotics for 10 days. Well it's been 48 hours and the pain is the same if not worse then 2 days ago. How fast should the antibiotics relieve the pain?

I have an appt on Tue with the endodontist who preformed the root canal (per my dentist) so he can see what the problem is. At this point I think the crack extended into the root, as I grind my teeth at night. So I think the tooth needs to be pulled as does my dentist. If this pain doesn't subside, I'm thinking of calling the dentist to maybe get a higher dose or different antibiotic, as I'm not sure I can withstand the appt with the endo poking around that area to look at it. I wonder why its necesary for me to see the endo, and not just go to the oral surgeon to get it taken out. As I know you cannot tell if the root is cracked by Xray.

I have a oral surgeon who I will ask to pull the tooth, but can that be done when it's abscessed and in pain?

My endodontist recommended an apicoectomy. I am having a consult with my oral surgeon in a few days. I'm not sure whether to go ahead with the apio or simply have the tooth pulled. It's #3, a molar in the top back of my mouth. My concern is that the endodontist thinks that the crack could have gone into the root but they wont know until they get inside the tooth.

I hesitate to do the apio and then find out the tooth is worthless and have to pull it. I've spent way more money then I'd like to spend on this.

But I figure if I have the tooth pulled now, then I can spend all the money I WOULD have spent on multiple procedures for an implant or bridge...
