Interesting....

Brother, Can You Spare a Tooth?

Taipei Medical University in Taiwan has established a tooth bank for autogenous tooth transplantation. Autogenous, or self-generating, transplants of healthy human teeth have proven better and less expensive than artificial dental implants, according to Professor Lee Sheng-yang of the university's School of Oral Hygiene.

In a cooperative effort with the commercial cryogenic tooth bank of Japan's Hiroshima University, unwanted premolar and wisdom teeth and teeth removed in orthodontic treatments can be preserved by deep freezing.

I know that teeth accidentally extracted can be replaced and more often that not take hold. So all this makes me wonder how teeth will be "harvested". Will people sell teeth like we do other organs or blood & plasma? Or, through stem cells will we simply grow teeth?

I wonder.

An artificial tooth can't rot/decay. An implanted natural tooth can. For that reason alone, the claim that the natural one is "better" is proven wrong.

That's a good point, but with a natural tooth one can sense food and chewing is much more natural. I suppose it depends on ones point of view on such things. Some people opt purely for technology and others for more natural and personal reasons.

collecting stem cells from teeth can be use for more than just regenerating teeth. unless this is another type of technology.
we work with a company called stemsave. its a decent bit of investment to store your teeth for a long time. but some may think its worth it

It's an interesting debate- natural v. unnatural teeth. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I'll try and keep mine as long as possible.

I have a bridge on the left side, and an implant on a molar on my right. And a bridge on the front 6 (all upper). I don't chew with the front, so I obviously can't tell what chewing on them feels like. But the implant totally feels more "normal" when I chew, than chewing on the bridge on the other side. I think it might just be that the dentist didn't do a very good job with the bridge, I'll find out at the 6th month visit and ask him how he thinks it's holding up. It feels weird, like it's not settled properly or something. But with the implant tooth, I can't even tell it's not real, not to use it, or to look at it.

Oh, to be sure, an implant tooth probably looks more natural. I have a bridge and about 8 crowns and they all look and function well. If I were to get full dentures, then I'd look into an implant system.
