OK this is weird. It started last week and seems to get worse after I use mouthwash. Almost 2 years ago I had a root canal and crown placed on a molar in the lower right part of my mouth. For the past week, the gum below the front of the crown is swollen and hard. It does not hurt, yet.
I make it a point to floss after eating, and haven't changed anything in my routine. It seems to get inflamed the most after I use mouthwash.
I guess if this doesn't go away I'm going to have to call the dentist. It's weird that the gum is puffed up just in this one area. I've had gums irritated before due to stuck food particles I had trouble dislodging, but this is completely different.
Get to the dentist ASAP. It may be simple irritation from a poor fit as mentioned, or it could be an abscess which is serious business. Don't put this off.
Well I was lucky they let me come in this afternoon. Unfortunately it is an abcess. They drained some pus from it, and I am on antibiotics.
The X-Ray is not good. This tooth had a root canal and crown 2 years ago, but the roots are "not in good condition" according to the Dentist. Which means that it is very likely it will have to be pulled, anyway.
I'm kinda annoyed, because I spent several hundred dollars on this, paying them off slowly, and the procedure was not successful. I aint giving them anymore $$ that's for sure.
Unfortunately Root Canals arent covered by my insurance.
And I've been having my cleanings and dental vists regularly.
So its not like I've been neglecting my mouth.
They will be seeing me again in October. I really dont want it pulled.
If you want to try to save the tooth, ask for a referral to an endodontist, a root canal specialist. He/she may be more experienced in treating failing root canals.
I'm in the same situation. About 9 years ago, i had a SUCCESSFUL root canal on my 2nd from back molar. Last September, i chipped the tooth and had to get a 'post and crown'. About 2 weeks ago, my tooth started hurting and then my 'cheek' swelled out like I just had my wisdom tooth pulled. This was a Saturday, called the dentist, he immediately put me on antibotics and he said call Tuesday morning. (Monday was Labor day). Within 2 days, the swelling went down, pain was VERY VERY minimal. Went to the dentist, took an x-ray, 'oh wow, you have an infection, have to pull the tooth'. HELLO? It's in the gum, why pull the tooth? Antibotics are working great....had a second opinion...Quack if i ever saw one....oh, yea, get the tooth pulled....'any other questions'? So now, after reading some posts, i'm thinking that maybe the post and crown was done wrong? It's right AT that tooth. The root canal looks clean and they even said that. HELP, they want to 'operate' by next week! I do not want to have it pulled....
And on another note, the reason i KNOW that it's been a year since the post/crown?? I just finished paying the $1000 12/months no interest, last week!!! They said that any work they do, they will deduct $1000. Well, yea, probably they don't want to get sued because they messed up....
