Hello, I am a 21 year old female and i am relocating to Denver area from NJ. I just need a change in my life and am making the drastic decision of moving halfway across the country!! unfortunatly i do not know ANYTHING about denver really except its somewhere i always wanted to go. I plan to leave by March 23 and at the current time i have no job and no place to live yet once i get there so i need as much help and as many opinions as possible. If anyone can help me out i would greatly appreciate it. I have been in the medical field here in NJ though so i would like a job in the healthcare field. i have a degree in medical assisting so somewhere near a hospital or medical center would be great and also where the most affordable areas are but still in a nice area. i want to feel safe as i am a singe girl who knows only 1 person in CO. PLEASE HELP ME!! any information would be appreciated!

It's a big city/metro area of @3M, with lots of good hospitals.

Use our search tool with keywords like: hospital, medical, etc.

Some hospitals are near the light rail system, and there is good bus service.

Bring a good 6 months of living costs with you. Might have to work retail or wait tables upon arrival until a job shows up.

Use Craigslist to find affordable apartments, but be careful of scammers on that site.

Be prepared for a dry climate with brilliant sunshine. Drink LOTS of water upon arrival until you get acclimated. Use sunscreen, sunglasses to protect the eyes from powerful rays at these altitudes, lip balm, hat, skin lotion and maybe saline nasal spray.

You can do it. Fear not.

PS: lots more men in Denver than women; happy hunting!

Good luck and welcome to Denver. You will love it here. My wife is originally from Jersey. The city is relatively safe. I work near a big hospital that is also near the light rail, restaurants/bars and plenty apartment living in a very nice area. The hospital is Sky Ridge and the area is called Lone Tree. If you can afford the rent you will be living in a great area.

here are a few threads to look at that sound similar to your situation.

Look at what I wrote in the first link, it is pretty much exactly what i would say to you. Its possible to pick up everything and move, without a job. I did, and found a job through a temp agency within a few months, and that was a year ago. Should be more jobs now. Healthcare is a good one to get into. there is a lot of risk involved in picking up and moving, and its a very new situation/environment for me personally. But its actually been quite an adventure, and I am so glad I moved. I know I made the right decision. Having said that, I feel I am lucky to be in the situation I am in now. You just gotta get some courage, and spend money very wisely, do tons of research. I think you would be ok.

Don't worry about safety, you will feel completely safe unless you live right on colfax. even then, coming from jersey, you might still feel safe lol. no offense to jersey ofcourse : )

Look at craigslist for apartment rentals to get an idea of what it will cost for you to live. I saved enough for like 3 or 4 months rent before I moved, but if you really want to be safe, you should save more.

Best of luck and most importantly Bon Voyage! Let me know if you have any other questions, this is a great forum for info on the city of Denver. Helped me quite a bit (thanks guys!)

congrats on getting out of nj while you are still young! we moved here last year from northern nj. couldn't stand the cost of living there any longer, the lack of sunshine and the lack of friendly people. we moved to highlands ranch and love it here!!!! i think you are making a great decision. good luck in your job search, you will love it here!

I'm also moving to Denver in the next month, and bringing my girlfriend.. I'm kind of terrified about all the details, but I am excited! We're coming from the Lehigh Valley in PA, less than 5 miles from the NJ border. My girlfriend will be coming without a job, and I'm hoping she will have a similar story to KottkeKU.
