The Subaru engines have become popular for use in experimental aircraft for over 10 years for a variety of reasons. Reliability, decent power to weight ratio and relative low cost. A Glasair RG1 aircraft powered by a Subaru Alcyone SVX EG33 six cylinder 202 cubic inch engine performs a 260 mph fly by:

Subaru also makes Robin industrial engines. From the people I know who work with industrial engines, the Robins get mixed reviews.

I suppose you can name an AWD vehicle that gets 27/36 MPG city and highway respectively that can pass a side to side roller test that isn't a Subaru then?

Because as far as the rest of the automotive industry and EPA is concerned, the 2012 Subaru Impreza is the most fuel efficient AWD vehicle in the United States. I'm pretty sure that's green by AWD standards. Your Prius is welcome to join as a FWD though.

Note in my post that I excluded the new Impreza from my statement that Subarus are not very fuel-efficient. That said, the Impreza is a subcompact and not especially peppy. Also, the Impreza, unlike the Forester and Outback, has pretty lousy ground clearance. AWD doesn't do much good if the vehicle is high-centered in deep snow. One of the reasons that the Forester and Outback are good snow vehicles is that they have very good ground clearance for a car platform, in addition to AWD.

By the way, I don't have a Prius, though I think that it is a fine vehicle.

The Impreza is not a subcompact. The Honda Fit is a subcompact for reference. The Impreza is a sedan or hatchback. Ground clearance isn't everything. AWD is used in more than just snowy weather for that matter.

I own a Subaru and live in the desert. Subaru's are about as common as Ferrari's out here! Lol...

I realize I am replying to a year and a half old post, but......

We need Audi to start bringing the TDI engines over in the A3 and A4 Quattro models. The A6 TDI, which is huge compared to the Impreza, gets 24 city and 38 highway. Turbo diesel is awesome. The Jetta sportwagon, which is FWD, gets 42 mpg highway.

I completely agree with this. Unfortunately, a pretty good smear campaign was done so that everyone thinks that diesel is this nasty fuel which turns the skies black.

It is nice seeing that BMW is embracing the diesel market here in the states again. Hopefully more companies will jump on board.

I forgot about the Bimmers!

The new 328d xDrive sedan gets 43 highway mpg. Better than an Impreza.

Nah, diesel isn't nasty, especially the newer formulated diesel. BUT around here it costs anywhere from $0.50/gallon to $1/gallon more and that is a deterrent to owning one.
