I will be moving from Canada to Denver in the next 3 or 4 months. I have a 2011 Subaru Impreza and the lease will be over at the end of this year. At that time the car will have about 40,000 miles on it and I will have a choice to either return it or buy it for about $10,500 USD. I think the price is good for that mileage.
What will be the cost to get the car pass all necessary test / registrations in order to be able to legally drive it in Denver? I am better off leaving the car behind and buying a new car when I arrive? Please, let me know what you think. Thanks!

IMO it'll cost a couple hundred dollars to bring it here, but IMO you should bring it here as Subaru cars are the gold standard for driving in the snow here in COLO. Others on here may give you a more accurate price to get it all through the registration process but the mobility is worth the price and there's a ready market here for most any Subaru if you care to sell it.

Still, look in the index of key threads, under transportation, for the Car Free Living thread....it can be done fairly well here and is getting better as more light rail lines open.

I agree with Mike-bring it here. In the end paying maybe $1000 to get it all done here for driving here in CO compared to let's say $15k for lease payments is well worth it. Again huge Subaru market up here if you want to sell it. They tried telling me it was mandatory to buy one if I move here, lol. But I bought a Lexus instead

1. There is NO safety inspection.
2. There is an emissions test. $25 CASH. http://www.aircarecolorado.com/
Your car will likely pass easily.
3. Registration should be about $300/yr (and declines with age). You register with your local county DMV. New Colorado Resident Vehicle Registration | Denver County Motor Vehicle Department | DenverGov.org
4. Driver's license is with the state DMV (a completely separate organization). Cash only. https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/dmv...rivers-license

FYI
1. New residents are required to own a Subaru. You have this covered.
2. New residents must own at least one The North Face clothing item.
3. Male residents are required to wear shorts at least one day in January.

Are you aware of all the issues regarding importing a vehicle from Canada into the US ??

If not, you may want to read these webpages:
Importing a Motor Vehicle | U.S. Customs and Border Protection
Importing Vehicles and Engines into the U.S. | Transportation & Air Quality | US EPA
Importing Canadian Vehicles | Importing Vehicles and Engines | US EPA
Vehicle Importation and Certification Requirements

Good Luck........

I need to figure out if I have to pay import duties and how much.

I guess I will have to contact US Customs and Border Patrol to find out more.

I have heard from other people who have looked in to this and ended up selling the car in Canada. It wasn't worth it unless there is some special attachment to the car.
