To my knowledge they haven't expanded overnight metered parking outside of downtown. If it has a meter outside of downtown it likely still has the no parking between 2am and 6am rule. On those as long as you don't park overnight you should be good parking without paying from after the hour posted until 2am.

Although that could have changed since the last time I had to pay attention to those rules (only rarely drive within the city and when I do it's usually using Car2go which has more lenient parking restrictions).

That's what I figured. My first parking ticket was due to misreading the label as well. Thankfully, the ticket is only for $25. Sometimes parking downtown costs more than that.

Just be grateful you didn't have your vehicle towed..then the cost would go thru the roof!!

You didn't mention the actual ticket cost??? What was it just out of curiosity?
In the end..once dealt with you will never do that again..unless fighting bureaucracy is you mission in life

We did see "no parking on X day of the week" for street sweeping, so that does seem to be in effect even in Cap Hill. But parking overnight was ok. Staying in an apartment near there, we basically just had to set an alarm clock and go pay the meter by 9AM each morning. Probably a bit different rules than downtown because there were tons of tall apartment buildings around and not nearly enough lot parking.
