Amazon is looking for a city where it can stick a second $5 billion HQ. Could a Colorado community be in the mix?

Tech giant has one facility is Aurora, is building a second there and one in Thornton

Quote:
Amazon is seeking proposals from local and state government leaders, and says it is focusing on metropolitan areas with more than 1 million people. It is also looking for areas that can attract and retain technical workers and “a stable and business-friendly environment.”
Amazon is on the lookout for another North American city to host the tech giant's second headquarters.

Seems like Denver could be in contention with the new Amazon facilities that are here or in the process of coming here, although maybe something further East makes more sense geographically.

But that would certainly be a great thing for the economy of whatever area gets it, and I hope that the powers that be here the Denver metro will be putting in a strong response to the RFP.

Nope, can't see it. If they are looking for a 2nd HQ away from Seattle, my money would be someplace closer to the highly concentrated population centers on the east coast. I'm thinking something like the FedEx hub, east coast access, close to population, mild weather...

too close to Seattle. Think central or east time zone.

Amazon recruits the bejeezus out of Denver. I've told their recruiters multiple times that I'm not interested in living in Seattle.

I think Denver has a legitimate chance given the area's strong tech focus and desirability with young talent.

Could be Denver, it gives them dominance in the Intermountain West.

I'd rule out Chicago for it's high taxes and corrupt government.

Indianapolis is much more tax friendly without high realty costs. Same for Memphis, Kansas City and St Louis.

Memphis gives them access to FEDEX main hub from which they could cram stuff into planes for orders placed late in the date or early evening. IBM has a large warehouse there just for the purpose of getting high priority items out the door as late as 10PM and in your hands by 10AM the next day.

Just east of St Louis there is the Mid-America airport, right next to Scott AFB in Belleville, IL. Though it is in IL, the area is mostly farmland out there and land should be cheap for a massive set of buildings and company town.

Cannot rule out that there will be more such HQs built, this may not be the last one.

Yeah not gonna happen.

I also don't want it to happen. And no, I don't mean that in an anti growth way. Right now, Denver is chugging along just fine with it's very healthy and diversified economy. Moving in a company like Amazon, that is really just searching for massive handouts, would just put our economy at a bigger risk during a down turn. For Denver, the positives don't out weigh the negatives. I would rather see it built in a city that really needs to economic boost (Detroit, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Baltimore, etc). Denver is also very close to Seattle, and with a relatively similar COL, I don't see what benefits Denver could provide other than what, the weather?

It sounds like Amazon just wants to move out of Seattle so they can pay their employees less.

God I hope not. That would throw out the chance of ever being able to afford a home here. Plus I think they'd have a hard time finding workers without them getting poached with the tight labor market here. And it wouldn't be geographically different enough. And I don't want Denver to give them some massive subsidy. We're already doing fine.

My bet is a smaller great lakes city or one in the non Costal south.

Amazon just committed ( a few months ago) to a 900 acres site for it Air Hub location at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport for his PrimeAir Sort Operations.

Amazon has been moving away from both FedEx and UPS for is deliveries for the last year or so. Going to USPS for its last mile delivery.

They ship and sort the packages internally then drop them off each day at the USPS Delivery units for the Mail Person to do the final mile delivery to the homes and/or businesses.

Thanks for that info, it makes excellent sense. The USPS is geared up, trained and equipped with a fleet of local delivery trucks that come to every house in the nation six days a week, thus a perfect solution for that last mile especially since UPS and FEDEX don't routinely deliver on Saturdays.
