Hi all,

My wife and I are relocating in January from Chicago, we've had great help from the this forum already, so THANK YOU.

My wife posed an interesting question as we have been looking at real estate... we don't see many homes with barred front doors (example here: https://www.redfin.com/CO/Arvada/114.../home/34389137

In Chicago (bad areas) these are common, I am guessing they are decorative in Colorado?

Thanks!

Barred doors were very common in the 60s-80s. A lot of the houses still have them.

Yes, decorative. More to protect the glass "storm door" function of the door. They can easily be breached if someone is serious about breaking in.

Notice there are no bars on the windows like there would be in "bad" areas anywhere.

You don't see them too often, mainly in the older neighborhoods as they were put on older homes and some home owners have never removed them. I wouldn't rule out a house or area for that reason

And that area is fine too.

This. They should have screens that you can swap out with the storm glass in warmer months.

I'm in a new construction area and lots of people add them after they move in because they are so functional and while someone could still get in, they provide at least some protection if you want to have a screened front door open in nice weather.

Semi-decorative.
Semi-anti-burglar.

We put one on our former house in 1988. Mostly so we could leave the solid door open at night as we did not have A/C.

You also have to remember that we (as a country) went thru a paranoid stage in the 1970s and 80s about crime.

This house https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3...13351789_zpid/ had bars on the bedroom windows from 1980 to 2008. Those of you who know Denver will laugh hysterically about this.

You will notice the house has no air conditioning. That is not uncommon. Likely they will leave the front door open at night to allow the house to cool off.

That’s nothing compared to the walls the house across the street has.
