Ok. I gotcha.

Around cap hill/cheeseman park/congress park is my vote then. All my east coast friends like it because it has old buildings, and reminds them of home. it's got character. Not to mention it is the most LGBT friendly section of denver! Tons of gay bars all around. drag queen bingo!

People say Colfax can be scary, but they aren't from the east. I live for colfax. Drag queens, tweakers, punks, strange hippies walking barefoot to sanchos. yes please!

Still, be wary and don't LIVE on the colfax stretch from lincoln to lafeyette (roughly). That mcdonalds has it's share of dealers and squatters. 2 blocks south and you are fine.

I live by the cap hill king soopers on 9th and downing. They call it the "queen soopers" because of all the drag queens. (is that politically acceptable to say anymores?) It's an old reputaion thing, it's not like it's filled with them, mostly normal people live here. it's just colorful though, I feel so at home!

Around the bluebird (favorite music venue, anywhere around there i recommend), it's super cool! (and more tame).

As for cherry creek. I avoid it because it has a lot of rich families, fancy buildings, and I drop the F bomb a lot. But it is a walkable family friendly part of town.

Be careful, denver is not an east coast city, and likely will never be. It has it's colorful portions, but it's not nearly as bustling, or busy as the east. I consider that a good thing. Fashion, yeah denver fashion is average at best.

I have always thought of Highland/Berkeley area as Denver’s Brooklyn. Apples and oranges of course, but it’s the closest thing we’ve got.

There's only one Brooklyn.

Man! You guys don’t read caveats very well. I am quite familiar with Brooklyn and stand by my “closest thing we’ve got.” statement.

I read it, but still... :-)
BTW, I was born there and lived there for a short time in my childhood. At that time, most of what's hipster now were slums/poor neighborhoods.

One thing I will say is that when I moved here, I was surprised by the amount of strollers I see in the areas around Cheesman and City Park. Washington Park West and Platt Park sound like ideal fits IMO. Walking distance to grocery stores, a farmers market, restaurants, and coffee shops, parks, and a train station. South Broadway is full of cool and/or divey places. Neighbors that actually make friends with each other at the pubs and park.
