I think it's a northern brown snake. It's right outside my front door. It likes my flower stand...FML

Hard to see from the picture but bull snakes are common around here.

It's not a bullsnake, I've caught many. It looks like a western terrestrial garter snake.

The shape of the head will tip you off whether it is venomous. The venomous snakes usually have a "V" shaped head. You might want to compare the photo to known snakes and make an identification.

Indeed. Also cat eyes.

The only exception that I know about in North America that violates this rule is a coral snake. But obviously that's not a coral snake.

(Friendly fyi... If it were possibly a coral snake (which it is not) then use the color rule:
"Red touches yellow, kills a fellow. Red touches black, friend of Jack.")
