We are planning to move to Denver from Atlanta, GA sometime this year. We've taken several trips to Denver to scope out neighborhoods and love the Downtown Denver area and places like Washington Park. At first, we are planning to rent a house, but hope to purchase a home in the Dever area next year.

We're wondering if someone can help give us an idea of expenses (utilities, etc.) so that we know what to expect (and what to have saved up while we job hunt). We have an idea of what rent may run in the areas we like, but are unsure of the average cost of other expenses.

Thanks!

Probably depends on what place you're living in, mostly the size, so it's hard to give you exact numbers. One thing about the older homes in Washington Park is that you have to count on higher utility bills in the winter, particularly gas bills, due to the fact that older homes are not quite as energy efficient generally as new homes. Your summer gas bill will be miniscule however. Water in the summer will depend entirely on how much you water your lawn/landscaping -- that's where the lion's share of the water goes.

Depending on apts. or houses and how large the space is here's what I have been told while apt. hunting:

Many apts., even those in converted Victorian houses, include heat/water/sewer and elec is sep. Find out what the deal is at the place you are interested in.

I've been told, for several of the 1 br apts. I have looked at, in the $500 to $695 price range, (500 to 700 square feet) heat if not included is often split by all tenants in the building can run $20 to $50 a month summer to winter, elec. can be $10 to $20.

I live in a 2 br apt. (half a house really, a duplex with a pvt fenced backyard) in a town an hour north of Denver. My utils are killing me. My heat is $100 a month in the winter, ****ty single pane windows, older brick duplex. My elec. bill includes trash (which is expensive), recycle, a city mosquito spraying fee and a bunch of other bull**** fees. It has ranged from never below $30 (it's $10 bucks a month alone for trash cart rental and trash pickup and recycle) to as high as $70 I think. Not cheap. My rent is $595 here, cheap for a 2 br, but I don't need 2 brs. Hope that helps some.

I know our automobile and home owners insurance went up drastically when we moved here (and we even get the safety discounts because of clean driving records and no accidents), so, you might want to check out the insurance costs when tallying your budget.
