Posted a similar question on the Boulder Site, but didn't get any leads, so...

Moved from TN/GA in October (originally from MD, lived in CA as well) and was telecommuting to my job doing RPG Programming.
Unfortunately, I was laid off at the end of March, and I haven't seen any jobs for RPG Programming anywhere in Colorado.
Does anyone know of any companies using the AS400/RPG in Boulder/Denver?

TIA

I'm sure there must be some, but unfortunately can't help you out. I worked for a company that used support their software on AS400, but they dropped the support about 4-5 years ago thankfully. But on the positive side, the area does have a number of larger companies that may still be using the platform, Lockheed, Lucent/Avaya, Sun (but I'm betting they are solely Solaris by this point), Northrup, Raytheon, etc.
I'm guessing US Defense contracting companies may still be heavily invested in AS400, which would make me think of the Federal Center in Lakewood (just south on Kipling off Hwy 6) as an area of interest for you. I figure you already know about the DTC at least.
Boulder is more of a startup focused area, so I'd suspect little to no use of AS400 there. With the exception that I know there's a IBM support call center there, so there may be some possibility that someone uses the platform up there.
Colorado Springs may offer some possibilities for you too having a heavy military influence, the commute from the south side of Denver (Castle Rock area) wouldn't be too bad if you still wanted to be close to Denver.

Hope some of that helps

Its not a good sign if you can't find RPG Programming jobs anywhere in Colorado. I'm trying to sound encouraging here - its probably time to re-invent. Software programming is a very difficult skill to learn and it sounds like you have a lot of experience. You have the ability to expand outside of RPG programming to some other programming language. Sure, maybe you'll take a pay cut in the short term, but you'll probably set yourself up better down the road and probably work with newer and better technology. And if you're sick of programming, you can probably expand out and do something related like systems analysis or project management. You now have the opportunity to learn new things and better your position.

Best of luck to you.

Don't know much AS400/RPG work in Denver. Most shops in the area are using php, Java, or .NET. IBM has a decent presence in Boulder, but I don't know how much of that is AS400. StorageTek now Sun now Oracle does a lot of mainframe assembly stuff, but not AS400. This article mentions that that Denver AS400 user group shut down a while back:

The Four Hundred--Another AS/400 User Group Powers Down

Your best bet going in cold is to search the job sites, Monster, Dice, careerbuilder, etc, and see what's there. Craigslist used to be good, but they started charging for listings and the traffic has dried up. For Java/.NET/php, the Rocky Mountain Internet Users Group (RMIUG) is the place to go - silly name, but it's free and a lot of people use it.

Another post suggested picking up new skills, which you may or may not be interested in. If you are, you might want to look into iPhone development - it's in very high demand right at the moment. It is XCode with Objective C, which pretty much makes it Mac only - unlike C++ or Java, which have a wider adoption range.

Good info from the posters above...

Thanks, I will look into those companies (zionvier), and have been debating on whether or not to do a complete career change (teaching?) or learn another programming language.
The bad thing about teaching is that I'd take pretty much take a 50% pay cut and being almost 40, and my wife and I wanting to start a family soon, it doesn't sound possible to teach and have children (this late in my life).
Also, the fact that we moved in October and are renting doesn't help.

Thanks again for all your suggestions
