Hello,

I am currently a member in the military and i am being stationed in detroit.
My stepbrother and I are moving to detroit and i was wondering what would be a good area to live in. We are both car fanatics/gearheads and have older built cars. So car theft is a big thing for us. I also would like some place semi rural, and i require a place with a garage. If anyone has any good suggestion of a area where i could find these things i would greatly appreciate it.

Metropolitan Detroit is large, where exactly are you being stationed?

I will be stationed at the Coast Guard station on belle isle, but im not worried about a little bit of a drive time if necessary. I was looking at a house out in pontiac, but i dont know anything about the areas.

Oh man, you need some guidance bad. You're stationed on Belle Isle and you were looking in Pontiac? How did that come about?

Yeah, Pontiac is going to be a serious hike for you to Detroit. If you are looking for something semi-rural, I might consider the outskirts of Romulus south of the airport, or perhaps Belleville.

Furthermore, Pontiac itself is highly urbanized.

I wonder if the less-developed portions of Harrison, Chesterfield, Macomb and Ray townships may be a possibility - more sheer distance than Romulus, but one would not have to go through the whole city of Detroit to get to and from Belle Isle.

Clair County or the town of St. Clair sounds perfect for you. Go out I-94. You'll find something you like that way. Romulus sucks. Don't go there.

Plus, it's just a disaster. A little mini Detroit nestled inbetween the affluent suburbs.

Look in Chesterfield Township or 23-32 Mile road vicinity east of I-94. You'd be right off 94 so you can make it to Belle Isle in 35-45 minutes. North of 23 Mile is more rural than suburban so you might be a little too isolated (i.e. bars, going out etc) unless you want that feel. If so - anything off County Line Rd (between 23 Mile and 32 Mile) would be fine.
