Thanks for posting this. Out of curiosity, what are the current plans for the regional transit system the article mentions?

A rapid transit bus will go from Detroit to Pontiac along Woodward. After the light rail opens, the RTA is going to try to get a regional tax and federal money to start construction on the BRT route by 2018.

I'm a bit confused about how the streetcar will run. Looking at the construction it seems it will be two lanes(north&south)along Woodward Ave.
Am I correct?

Mass rail is interesting
all mass rail projects ignore the safety factor of not being encased in a private steel box when traveling thru violent areas
Mass transit would be a benefit to any city
But like here only people with nothing to lose ride them

Countermeasures are possible. The rate of crime on routes through challenged areas is actually less than one might imagine. Random police boardings are one countermeasure typically deployed. Most systems are rife with cameras / video monitoring. More drastic countermeasures can be considered (for example shall issue concealed carry to driver if qualified).

Wait... why would it need to be in a steel box? buses aren't.

Yes, one lane along each curb lane. It looks like the turn arounds at both ends will be one lane in the center of the road where the streetcars back onto the single track before reversing course.

Doesn't Amtrak already run between Detroit and Pontiac?

Yea, going to Chicago. A train pulls into Pontiac every 3-4 hours. Not exactly an ideal setup for local commuter usage.
