So I was browsing online, and I came across this website...

Socialist Party of Metro Detroit

Quote:
THE SOCIALIST PARTY OF METRO DETROIT ASPIRES TO BRING THE MESSAGE OF SOCIALISM, JUSTICE, AND EQUALITY TO ALL COMMUNITIES, WHILE FORMING LASTING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH THE COURSE OF WIDENING STRUGGLES TO COLLECTIVELY BUILD A NEW WORKING PEOPLE'S DETROIT OVER THE SMOLDERING ASHES OF CAPITALISM"
It really gets me thinking. Is Detroit a socialist? I mean, with all of the people on welfare, it seems as if this is true. Any objections?

I guess that depends on how socialism is actually defined. In this country socialism appears to be any government program that someone doesn't like.

Are you aware that we have always had socialist parties and movements in America, and that the existence of such a party does not make Detroit citizens "socialist"?
What "really got me thinking" is what your purpose might be for such a post.

** What "objections" might you be referring to? Is this post a statement posing as a question?
** Are you against socialism in principle - is that it?

With the high amount of citizens with receiving government benefits, I'd have to say otherwise. A city normally doesn't have its own socialist party...

You linked to the "socialist party of detroit" - so in your view most Detroiters are members of this party? You need to share what you know about this matter.
I think you're dodging. Your point is that most Detroit citizens are receiving government benefits and, in your book, this is wrong?
Citizens should not receive government benefits i.e. welfare?

Please clarify.

The city itself has been run by a bunch of socialist-leaning, race-baiting Democrats for 50 years and the results show for themselves. The demise of the auto industry had a lot to do with it but that's no excuse for the city's deplorable situation today. Detroit failed to attract business and has been out-competed by nearby Oakland County. Other one-industry towns like Pittsburgh were able to attract new industries but Detroit did not.

The U.S. has been one of the world's most populous countries for decades. Socialism just cannot work with the number of people living in this country. Detroit is proof of that. I am for providing for the needy, but socialism (Detroit economics and Obamanomics) encourages this:

The number of people who receive SNAP benefits has been increasing not because of policy (which has not been changed in recent years), but because the cost of living has far outpaced the income of families with people employed in service fields (such as retail). More families are meeting the guidelines than there were before.

The graph is somewhat deceptive. At first look, one would think the number of people receiving SNAP/Food Stamps was near zero in 2007. Look at the numbers on the edges of the graph again - you're only seeing about the top third of the graph - the bottom of the graph has been cut off.

As for Detroit being socialist? Well, imagine the situation from the perspective of so many people living in Detroit. Politicians on the right are talking about eliminating welfare benefits, eliminating food stamps, replacing existing taxes with new ones that generate more revenue from the poor, and putting people in labor camps for petty crimes. Many of these people are truly dependent on handouts and that is not likely to change anytime soon. From their perspective, capitalism did not beiong them prosperity. From their perspective, capitalists don't call them back after a job interview, charge them more than they charge their friends in the suburbs for the same auto insurance, expect them to work hard for little pay, and have left dilapidated abandoned buildings and pollution in their communities. How could you expect them to support the right wing?

Just because there is a "Socialist Party of Detroit" does not mean that the city is socialist. The USA has had the Communist Party USA for several decades - I don't think that means the USA is a communist country!

Perhaps you need a dictionary?
Socialism is where a Government controls the means and production of industry.
Socialist can mean anything from giving food stamps to giving Corporations huge tax breaks. Notice how many don't complain about the latter.
