This isn't getting much love in the general Michigan forum, so I'm cross-posting the Detroit-specific section of the request here in hopes I might be able to get some help. Basically, if you don't want to read the link, we're going to look for a place together that biases the commute towards being shorter for her, but still not in East Lansing proper. Bonus points if there's some kind of shuttle to campus, but not required. Rent, not buy, condo/town house in a managed community preferred. Thoughts? TIA!

The I-96 corridor is pretty well developed and suburbanized out from Metro Detroit to Howell.

Howell, Brighton, South Lyon are your best bet for splitting the distance between the two. Your commute from out there to Dearborn is going to be more painful since you will going both directions with the peak flow of traffic inbound and outbound unless you have the ability to work/commute off-peak hours.

Howell, Brighton and South Lyon...I'm going to have to look at those. All I know about them is that there's a semblance of a downtown in Brighton and a bunch of factory outlets in Howell. I'm going to do my due diligence, but if you have any first-hand experience, I'd appreciate it. South Lyon doesn't look too bad, distance-wise, for me, but might be a bit of a stretch for her (new driver and all).

I am not sure about my ability to commute during off-peak hours - that will largely depend on my next job assignment. I do know we have some relatively flexible work-from-home options, but I'd still have to come into the office at least four times a week.

Brutal commute, especially going home from Dearborn to Brighton: 96 westbound at the 275 interchange always backs up. Would always sign the cross I wasn't going 96W when going up 275 to have dinner with my folks in Bloomfield.

How about 94 to the 23 instead?

94 to 23 is a LONG way.

Brighton would probably be best for both. From Dearborn I would run out M 14 to Gotfredson Road to North Territorial west to Curtis. Curtis north to 10 mile and make a quick left to Milford Road North and jump I 96.

I do this when I miss the 4:00 pm window to get through the I 275 / I 96 interchange coming from Detroit back to Bighton. After 4:00 pm 275 / 96 it is just a parking lot.

Again, it depends on the time of day you would be traveling. From Brighton to MSU is an easy 30 minutes...

US 23 can be horrific if there is one accident or a sudden rush from Ann Arbor.
