I did see a studio apartment for $729 in the City Place Apartment Building in Lafayette Park, I think that is what NOLA101 is referring to.

However, that building is about 2 blocks east of I-375 freeway, which is the eastern boundary of downtown.

So to reiterate to NOLA101 what others have already stated, THAT APARTMENT BUILDING IS NOT IN DOWNTOWN. It's close, but it is not in downtown proper. If I lived there, I would go to the restaurants in Eastern Market more often than downtown's restaurants, because they are a lot closer than much of downtown.

Why is somebody living in the greatest city in the nation wasting his time coming on here and badgering us about Detroit's rental prices. Just enjoy the city that never sleeps.

The 729$ listing is a tiny studio, barely an apartment. I see 2 bedroom apartments go for up to 3600$ rent per month in that link. Those are San Francisco prices. Detroit surely has improved faster that I ever could have imagined if they can get away with asking San Francisco prices.

No, 450 square feet is a big studio. In NYC and Paris there are sometimes one-bedrooms that size. In Tokyo and Hong Kong there are often two bedrooms at that size. Studios are usually around 300 square feet in other cities. And $729 is dirt cheap.

And no, there are no $3660 apartments in Lafayette Park, of any size. There's nothing even at half that rent.

Detroit doesn't have anything approaching "San Francisco prices", where single family homes start at over $1 million. Try homes starting at $1. But keep up with the ridiculous hyperbole, I guess.

no one in Detroit would ever make comparisons to San Fransisco.

LOL, no. Lafayette Park is most definitely downtown Detroit.

Is that the newest excuse? Now that "Detroit has no apartments available" failed, "$700 is high rent" failed, "real estate ads are all lies" failed, now it's "Lafayette Park isn't downtown, it's more Roseville, I think".

So now your claim is that Lafayette Park "doesn't count" because you are only counting buildings within the freeway loop. That means there are only 2 buildings in downtown Detroit built since the 1920's. The only buildings built within the freeway loop over the past century are Detroit City Apartments (the old Trolley Plaza) and Millender Center (which is basically just corporate apartments for GM employees).

And since Millender Center doesn't really rent much to the public, because GM, we're talking ONE apartment building = downtown Detroit, according to your weird standards.

So let's look at rents at the only building you consider to be downtown Detroit, which is a luxury doorman building. They have one bedrooms available at just over $1,000 a month. The same one bedrooms would be $4,000 a month in desirable cities, meaning that Village Green's Detroit City Apartments are dirt-cheap, just like Lafayette Park. Includes 24/7 concierge and tons of amenities and public spaces.

^If "someone" spends their day hoping from thread to thread for the purpose of arguing with others, generally in a condescending, insulting manner... perhaps they ought to take their own advice.

Do BLACKS in Detroit realize Bill Clinton took their manufacturing jobs away from them by signing NAFTA. Now, China is booming and very very rich. Trump is going to put a stop to this. This is one of his main issues. We need to do this. We NEED manufacturing back here!

There certainly are SF prices in Detroit: there are listings for 2900$ and 3600$ per month. And in my experience with renting in the US the actual prices are higher with all fees included or for a shorter lease. Probably soon people will start complaining Detroit is too much in demand and getting too expensive so they get priced out of downtown.

Welcome to 2 years ago.

I've been priced out of downtown Detroit - May. 27, 2014

Rents keep going up in greater downtown Detroit

The 2.5 times $700 rent requirement is not even $11/hour...
