I grew up in Warren about 2 miles north of TACOM but that was in the 1940's and 50's. Now I live in Sterling Heights which is on Warrens northern border. There are a lot of bedroom communities around here. I wouldn't say any are much different for the others. Generally, the furthur you get away from Detroit, the better it is.
Farmington Hills is quite a distance from TACOM and the only practical way is I-696 which is commonly referred to as the Autobahn. The speed limit signs being only suffestions. I wouldn't want to travel that road on a daily basis but tens of thousands of other people do every day.
If you are looking to buy a home here, you will have a lot to chose from and should be able to get a nice home for a very reasonable price. The cutbacks at the auto companies affected all income strata so every size house is on the market.
Schools? I live in the Utica School District and had 4 kids pass through the system. I don't think Utica Schools are particularly good. None of the high schools made it in the top 1500 high schools in the nation while Troy which is the next county has both of their high schools ranked highly.
Troy is in Oakland County and the prices on pretty much everything are higher than Macomb County which is where TACOM is located. No particular reason for that except the ultra rich people live in Birmingham, Bloomfield and a few other communities in Oakland county and their eminence must sprinkle magic fairy dust down on the common folks.

Royal Oak is a quick commute to Warren, especially if you are on the Eastern side. There are plenty of homes available at decent prices. My ex is selling my old house (and no I'm not advertising as I won't get a dime from his sale) on Englewood Ave. The home is 3BR and 2.5BA. Royal Oak schools are really good, too.
