The pop of Detroit is around 800-900 thou, but if we included all the suburbs how would we rank? Its sad that everybody has to live just outside the town, but hopefully someday everybody will get back into Detroit.

So how do we compare to all the other big cities as far as how many people we have in suburbs? Say it was the city + the suburbs, where would we rank?

There are more than a few reasons why so many people have left Detroit. As a former Detroiter (who grew up there from 1951 to 1978), I can rattle off a few familiar ones...crime, crummy schools, lack of jobs, poor local leadership, high taxes, ignorant neighbors and old fashioned red lining.
Things have not changed much in the 30 years since I left. In fact, my old neighborhood has just gone downhill.
People aren't going to move back unless something is done by the people who live there to make it a better place. I haven't seen that resolve and don't think it will happen in my lifetime.
