Although I've lived in Metro Detroit my entire life, I've never lived anywhere other than Oakland County, and although I've been to Detroit many times for outreach projects with Blight Busters and sporting events, I've never known a lot about "the hood". So, just out of curiosity, as a question for people with experience, which city is worse in terms of crime, poverty and overall quality of life? I know that they're both depressed, but I've only seen Highland Park from I-75, so I have no way of comparing them. Your comments are appreciated, just please don't make any racial remarks.

Remember there are many neighborhoods in Detroit. Woodbridge, Boston Edison, Corktown, Palmer Park, Indian Village, etc. compare favorably with most of Oakland County. There are 140 sq miles of Detroit, some of them are quite nice.

Highland Park is quite poor, and it's schools are worse than Detroit's. It's so small it's all a bright spot or bleak. So overall it's probably worse than Detroit.

Nick

I would say Highland Park.

Hamtramck can have okay parts that are still heavily Polish but it's losing those.

Whats wrong with the other areas in Hamtramck?

In Highland Park vs. Detroit, Detroit wins.

People from the suburbs are afraid of Detroit. People from Detroit are afraid of Highland Park. Highland Park was a "Ford" town many years ago. Ford's first BIG plant was in Highland Park on Woodward. There are many great examples of Craftsman style houses in Highland Park. What there is NOT a good example of, is a POLICE DEPARTMENT. Highland Park is so broke that it no longer has a police department and relies on the Wayne County Sheriff's department for police services. Do not move there.

Oh no, I would never move there, lol. I've lived in the suburbs all my life and I'd be eaten alive.

Detroit is a very large city, and alot of neighborhoods are very nice, lot of culture etc. Highland Park is all round crime and poverty, their schools are no good. Highland Park easily beats Detroit.

Why not bother to get off the freeway sometimes; you request not to make any racial remarks; however you do your 'drive-by' from the safety isolation of your rolling-ivory tower? what does that say about YOUR racist thoughts? try going through it on the surface streets; checking out the historic Highland Park Community College, the Highland Park Hospital (Det.Osteopathic) on Highland Ave....you might be mildly surprised.
