Bottom line is sugar is NOT ADDICTING. Its just fat people being unable to pry themselves away from the table or away from eating the bad food. Its like an escape or comfort for them to eat bad unhealthy/sugary stuff. Like reading a good book is an escape and/or comfort for those who pursue intellectual endeavors. You never hear them say "oh Im addicted to reading". Its like uh "NO, you are NOT addicted to reading, you just really like to read".
Its just an easy way out of not taking responsibility for one's health to say "Oh I am addicted to sugar".
No, there is not such a thing. Sugar increases your blood sugar, gives you fast satisfaction feeling. That only means you are lacking healthy carbs in your diet. Right amount of whole grains throughout the day should fix it.
That is true. I can't think of the right way to put it but if we don't eat right, we are starving our bodies. I read that somewhere about people grabbing all kinds of food because the body wants to eat, but we're not feeding it the right things which can evenually cause obesity.
But when it's that time of month, I don't care what you say. I need chocolate and lots of it.
OK, day 2 down and I didn't eat any sweets. I thought of something else that helps if you're trying to go cold turkey and that is to not try to do too much at once. For now, just take the sweets out and don't worry about dieting. If you have weight to lose and sweets are a terrible problem, then you'll lose weight anyway, and then when that stops you can see if you want to make any more adjustments, but I think if you try to diet and stop sweets at the same time, you're less likely to succeed. If you find that a particular food makes you crave sweets, you may want to take that out, but for the first week at least, just take out the big ones like cake, cookies, and candy. It takes a couple of weeks to start to lose weight though b/c your appetite and metabolism have to stabilize and find their new normal.
Here's the patter that's going thru my head: "But can't I make my special sugar cookies at Xmas? NO! But, but I love homemade cinnamon rolls. NO! Eat raisin bread instead. But Halloween is coming up and I can't say to to the Kit Kats. NO! And tie your hands behind your back. But my friends love when I make them a b-day cake. So stop up your nose when you're cooking it or make a kind you don't like. (as if there were such a thing)

What utter baloney! Glad you do not experience intense cravings; those of us who do know what we are talking about. Maybe the other addictive subtances you mentioned are worse, sure. Because science has not yet come up with proof does not mean something is not so. Besides, we are all very different in our biochemistry and perhaps only a small percentage of people can suffer from sugar addiction. By the way, I have beaten my sugar addiction and I eat right.

Stepka, I don't know if this will help you or not, but sometimes when I'm craving sweets or chocolate I'll eat a couple of Altoids, or chew sugarless gum. I think the strong taste of the Altoids helps and the gum just keeps me busy.
Thanks Marlow, I love altoids, but I think they have sugar? And I love them so much I'd keep eating them til they were gone--that strong mint doesn't faze me a bit. I'm tellin you I'm a hardcore junkie. Day 3 down and feeling much better and less depressed or stressed, though I still have a lot to do. (Moving day tomorrow.)

Actually sugar IS addicting! An addiction is defined as a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal. There have been scientific studies showing just that. The OP may want to read some of Dr. DesMaisons books which reference studies of C57 mice. But you don't need to read studies when your common sense will tell you sugar is addicting. If you are in touch with your body you will notice that the more sugar you eat the more you crave and that there are emotional changes when you withdraw from sugar. Several years ago I decided to cut out all obvious sugar from my diet. For me it was more about the emotional impact of sugar in my life than the weight loss. I found it easier to cut it out cold turkey and found the cravings lasted for about six months. During the first few weeks I felt physically tired and my muscles ached. I would recommend avoiding fruit juice and white flour during the withdrawal phase as well since it will increase cravings. Others may find it easier to withdraw more gradually, such as the method suggested by Dr. DesMaison. I wish the OP the best of luck in finding what works best for her.

Yes, I think Altoids do have a little sugar, but because they're small, only 2-3 calories. But you know yourself and if you can't stop after a couple, never mind. Good luck with the withdrawal symptoms--and with your move. That's a lot to take on at one time....
You might have a massive systemic Candida infection that is causing this "craving" for sugar. Candida which is yeast requires sugar as fuel and people who have bad cases of it are known to crave sugar and bread like mad. People don't realize how serious Candida can get, but there has been people who died from such massive infections of it that autopsies showed Candida cells covering even their hearts in a thick white film. One simple way to detect it is look in the mirror at your tongue and see if it has a white film on it.
