There are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids. There is no such thing as an essential carb.

A balanced diet will easily get the small amounts of the essential fatty acids and amino acids. IIUC the book is not addressing whether its better to have zero carbs, zero fats or zero proteins, since it (like WW) would view alll those as unhealthy approaches.

A diet that places an emphasis on healthy ratios of fats, protein & carbohydrates is called the Zone. It was popular in the late 90s.

Well, if you are eating a high fat/very low carb diet you will have a lot less of an appetite. On top of that you will be using that precious fat for many function....including energy.

Even the Zone is low in fat.... a half teaspoon is a block. Dukan advocates low fat also.

I consider Atkins the gold standard for low carb diets.

If you are eating very low carb you have to be eating higher fat or higher protein. My opinion is most peoples bodies function better long term on a high fat version of low carb, fat is a better energy source than protein.

I tried a higher protein version of low carb and felt good for the first week....then my energy went way down and I started feeling nauseated.......probably the buildup of protein breakdown byproducts.

If you feel sick on low carb it can be that its too low carb for your body, straining your kidneys or you may be dehydrated. When I say too low carb: burning fat tends to make you feel a bit of nausea(ketosis).

Just sharing as its a nice little article on it, has a fat figuring formula and some suggestions.

No, I feel great on HIGH FAT/LOW CARB, it was when I was doing HIGH PROTEIN/LOW CARB that I felt run down and sick. Being in Ketosis does not make me feel ill, eating LOTS of protein does.
