have you considered pilates? its work.. but i would not consider it high impact by any means. find a good instructor.
you like to go boating, and thats fantastic.. here is a problem that i would like to point out, so it can be avoided.
if you do not do some activities that will not just help you slim down, but also strengthen your body, you are more likely to get injured.
people who do not exercise and eat a lot of junk food (talking in general here) tend to have A LOT more inflammation in their bodies (although they may not know it), and this makes them more prone to injury.
check into pilates, or yoga, you can strengthen the body, stay healthy, with out pounding on your joints.
of course, get your doctor's approval first.
you would be suprised at the amount of pain you can reduce by changing your diet as well. not saying you have to go to all sprouts and tofu.. but limiting some of the inflammatory foods, and picking some that you enjoy but that don't cause inflammation, can do a world of good.
hope that helps.
i think you can enjoy the activities you love, and eat the foods you love, while losing the weight and reducing the pain... just need to regain balance.
good luck
