The long and short of the study is that when you normalize for other lifestyle factors, vegetarians and vegans did not live any longer than their meat eating counterparts.

So, class, what conclusions can we draw from this?
Conclusion should be: If you don't eat meat for moral/ethical reasons, nothing has changed.

If you don't eat meat thinking you are going to live longer, you are kidding yourself.

I don't eat meat for ethical reasons. My mother is on dialysis and is encouraged to eat MORE meat because her protein levels are too low. She ate meat all her life. She is 88 years old. I never told myself that giving up meat was going to make me live longer.

Please see The China Study. It is the most comprehensive study on this subject over many years which proves eating meat increases risk of heart disease over vegans in statistically significant levels.

I've discussed that book here more than once. The Cliff Notes version is that it is junk science that ignored contradictory evidence while cherry picking the evidence that supported it.

That may be, but THIS is just an abstract and most of us can't even read the study.

Curious, went and did a search for vegetarian diets studies.

LOTS of studies saying just he opposite, TONS just saying the vegetarians are healthier.

I'm still staying veg for the majority, I feel better, my RA is better, my BP is better, cholesterol, triglycerides... everything is better.

That's a study of my body.

Me, too. I am going to start incorporating more meat -vacationing this year in London and Paris and I want to eat some great food while in Paris.
Eating mainly a plant based diet so far has turned into a real eye opener for me as far as health, weight, and all around just feeling better.

I don't understand the ire over what someone else eats or doesn't eat. Do skinny people live longer?

The may or may not live longer than the obese. Being skinny is not necessarily a ticket to health. There are a lot of other factors to consider.

The ones who think they can put their pet cats on a vegan diet are really scary. Cats are obligate carnivores and, thus, gain nothing in terms of proper nutrition from plant proteins. They must eat a meat-based diet in order to stay in an optimal level of health.

Hopefully, such nuts are rare. I am vegetarian and my daughter is vegan. We both have cats, and neither one of us are that stupid. I won't even buy the cat food that has "greens" or other vegetables in it. What a cheesy marketing ploy. I let them out in nice weather to my little fenced-in garden behind my condo and they chew on a little grass that they later vomit back up somewhere in the house where I am guaranteed to not see and step in it. That's all the greens they need.
