What is that exactly? Is that how fast our metabolism or or how fit we are? I have an app that connects to my scale that tells me my metabolic age.

It's just another way of saying 'you've taken XX years off your life because of X,Y,and Z risk factors'.

Of course people stopped listening to the arguments like "smoking takes ten years off of your life" and other such stats, because they are just that--stats. Sure, some smokers may only live until their 60s, but others live until their 90s. Smoking isn't the only thing that defines your health. So too is it true for every other stat--smoking, drinking, exercising, eating healthy, etc.

Unfortunately the metabolic health is really nothing more than a stat too...Most online calculators will ask you for age, height, and weight....a few may ask you if you have diabetes or high blood pressure in your family. But there are a million things that can shorten your life. Cancer, working on your feet all day, living near a power plant, stress, poverty, sleep deprivation, not going to the dentist, eating too much salmon.....the list goes on and on. So at the end of the day, metabolic age really tells you nothing.

You don't believe in global warming, do you?

You are free to ignore empirical evidence in order to suit your own sensibilities but to cast it aside casually as being "just stats" is ignorant. Key health indicators when bundled and viewed in unison are a reliable means of determining a person's overall health status. Lower blood pressure, a lower resting heart rate, maintaining a healthy weight have all been proven reliable factors in calculating a person's overall level of health. Are they statistics? Yes. Will some people with high blood pressure and morbid obesity outlive people with better vital statistics? Yes. However, on average, morbidly obese people with at-risk health factors tend to die prematurely, particularly if they smoke.

I have no idea how that would be scientifically gauged.....it sounds like one of those measure how long the wrinkle on your penis is to figure out how many years you'll live things

Statistics never apply to the individual person or the individual chance-- only to the group or multiple incidents. A .300 hitter can't get 0.3 hits in this At Bat.

We can predict accurately, based on years of experience, for instance, that 1 in every 10,000 Americans die in traffic accidents every year-- but we can't tell you which ones will die.

Stats can only be used to instruct us in general. There are plenty of people with hi BP, hi HR and are obese who still live long lives. We place our bets based on the stats, but we don't always win. As Dirty Harry would ask, "Do ya feel lucky?"
