Unfortunately, sensitive "nervous" stomachs go hand-in-hand with the anxious type personality. It just is.
I have had that issue myself--it was the worst in my 30s and 40s but has seemed to level out in my 50s to where I really don't have any issues at all anymore. I think I just stopped thinking that I had something terribly wrong and just let it go. Sure, I get the occasional flare up but I don't let it rule me anymore.
I agree with the one suggestion about short courses of Prilosec or Nexium. You can get a rebound effect from them, especially when you take it long term, but not so much for a short period of time and they can be very helpful for bouts of high acid in the stomach.
It would be good that she memorize/remember what sets her off and avoid it. I actually had to stop drinking coffee because it would flare my gut up for DAYS. Sometimes when the acid is so high, my heart can race. Doctor said that is actually a "thing."
The other thing to look into is a possible connection to gall bladder issues. I didn't have this but there were many people on the internet who would have these GI issues, it was very common to experience anxiety with it, and it turned out to be a malfunctioning gall bladder.
Digestive enzymes can be helpful. She should just take them occasionally and there are some chewable ones that are really convenient to carry around and they taste good.
Had much the same problem: bloating, IBS, indigestion, etc. Eliminated gluten and voila! All my GI issues resolved -- without any medications. Made a believer out of me. And best of all, am not hungry eating a low carb way --still eat green carbs from plants. Feeling much, much better.
Also started taking a good probiotic. So nice, this relief and having a "normal" GI tract again. And even sleeping much better than before.
Important to add a goodly amount of good fats into your diet...those Omega 3's are wonderful!
I have the same issues - sensitive digestive system and anxious, nervous high strung personality. Goes hand in hand. One thing that helps me TREMENDOUSLY is good digestive enzymes. Also probiotics. I never go to sleep on a full stomach, I prefer to eat dinner early, or else just a small amount. Other than that I try not to consume too many acidic foods.
