With the proper diet and exercise plan, it is not very hard for a normal (read: no health issues) person to lose weight.

That's the easy part. Keeping it off is the hard part. That's why like 90% of people don't keep it off.

It's ten times easier to lose 40 pounds in a year than to keep 5 pounds off for six months.

Age is a big factor. Some of us used to lose five pounds in a week...effortlessly. Now, those same people feel that losing 5 pounds in a month is a HUGE success. You are obviously capable of gaining weight, hence the need to lose it. So, begin programming yourself to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Otherwise, when you get older and the struggle to keep the weight off begins, you will have a hard time because you are so used to it coming off effortlessly.

That's a calorie delta of 2500 per day. Maybe Lance Armstrong could do that in a week if he ate only one light salad and a chicken breast a day - and rode a century every day.
