In this tough economic time, it's time for some to get re-aquainted with their local library. I went to my local branch and picked up some books on diet and exercise. They also have exercise videos on VHS and DVD. If you come across a book or video you enjoy often then you know you won't be wasting your money buying that book or video. If your local branch doesn't have the copy, they can transfer it from the main branch and let you know when it's in (at least my library does this). Your local library may also be on the internet with their card catalog and even books to download onto MP3.
I was planning on checking out a South Beach diet book from the library, just to get the idea of the plan and try some of the recipes. I figure if I like it well enough, I can buy it cheap somewhere.
Being South Louisiana (Lafayette), our library also has some hard to find Cajun and Zydeco music CDs along with some books on local history. It also has some DVDs of some TV series.
I totally agree that the library is the way to go about checking out different books on diet and nutrition. You can usually have a book for 3 wks, then renew and have another 3 wks. this is usually enough time to see how to incorporate the info into your life! If you think it is a keeper, then look to purchase somewhere on sale. Also, our library has a used book sale 3 times a year..this is one of the best ways to pick up books. hardcovers are usually a buck. paperbacks, 50 cents. cannot beat it.
Great to see this thread applauding our local libraries. I truly think they are the heart and soul of a vibrant community. Many folks check out a library first before thinking of moving or retiring to a town.
My love of reading and literature is due, in large part, to my small town library where I grew up.
And in today's challenging economic times, many of us depend, more than ever, on our library for reading, researching, internet, and entertainment resources--even part of our social scene--our local library has a lively book series called Let's Talk About It, where we all read a series of books on a theme and local scholars are brought in to lead discussions--always a sell-out crowd for this free program.
Excellent for our Mental Health, you might say. It's very worthwhile to join the Friends of The Library and get involved in making your library even better....
I love Libraries...
